2023.06.04 10:17 redditohay Games crashing after 2-3 seconds from a run.
Yesterday I turned my quest2, and when I tried to run any of the sideloaded game - it ran, and then crashed to the main menu after 2-3 seconds without any information. Officially downloaded games works without any issue. Anyone has experienced such thing? Two weeks ago I played all of the games without any problem.

2023.06.04 10:16 mofo55 Configuring color setup on chinese onvif v2 ip cameras
Hello !
I have several about 7 years old generic chinese ip cameras that support onvif v2.
I used to configure some of them to work in black and white mode because I didn't want them to make a click sound when light condition changes.
I used CMS version 2.0.53 to configure the cameras and then to open the "Remote config" option that allowed me to change many settings including color.
For some reason I have a newly installed CMS 2.0.53 and it does not open the "Remote config" menu when I click it.
I couldn't find any other way to do it. I also tried to access the web interface of the camera via edge in explorer mode, And although it allows me to install the plugin, It request to install quicktime, and after the quicktime install it asks me again and again to install quicktime when I login.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you

2023.06.04 10:08 personman44 Trying to boot into FreeDOS to update BIOS, but UNetbootin for Linux is not properly creating a bootable USB, and I cannot boot with it. Possibly a permissions error?
I'm trying to do this on a Fedora 37 KDE virtual machine to be able to boot into FreeDOS and update the BIOS. This distro has SELinux implemented, though I'm not sure if it's the cause. PC is
Dell XPS 8500 from 2012, and
this is the update I'm trying to do.
I have been following
this and
this video (both doing the same exact thing pretty much) to use
UNetbootin to create a bootable USB to boot into
FreeDOS and update the BIOS of my decade old XPS 8500 PC. For PCs this old, you have to do this.
Dell and the videos show people formatting the USB to FAT32, so I did that too, and then used UNetbootin exactly like they did.
However, there's something that happens in all these videos that isn't happening for me, and it's causing the booting to fail. At
5:12 of this video and
4:00 of this video, after they use UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, the USB has a couple of files such as libcom32.c32, libutil.c32, menu.c32, syslinux.cfg, ubninit, and ubnkern. However, my USB only has ubnkern after using UNetbootin, and nothing else.
Also in the videos, when they click OK and let UNetbootin do the operation, they see a progress bar load, and then click exit on an installation complete popup. For me, I see the progress bar at 0% for a split second, and then the popup just disappears and the app closes.
I'm wondering if it's a permissions issue. It's pointed out in the first of those 2 videos at this timestamp that UNetbootin doesn't launch properly all the time, so he forces it to launch properly using sudo QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 unetbootin.
I had to use that command, because opening UNetbootin the normal way gives this popup titled "Run as root - KDE su"
```The action you requested needs root privileges.Please enter root's password below or click Ignore to continue with your current privileges"
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
Password: [Password Textbox]``
If I type the password, it gives me this error:
```Permission denied. Possibly incorrect password, please try again. On some systems, you need to be in a special group (often: wheel) to use this program
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\''' ```
If I click the ignore button, it gives this error popup titled "Error -KDE su"
```Cannot execute command 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
(Not sure if I got the apostrophes/quote symbols right. It doesn't let me copy the messages on any of these popups)
I can't try rufus instead because that's only available on Windows, and I'm on Linux. Any ideas on why this isn't working?
2023.06.04 10:07 GeneralOp8182 Entitled kid attempts (and fails) to guilt trip then threaten me to give up my rare game item.
Hi. This isn’t going to be very long. The TL;DR is the title in case you’re extra busy. There are only two people in this story. Me and EK. Necessary context is necessary, extra context is just for you avid readers out there. Enjoy the tea, as they say in Britain. Or… yeah no, just enjoy the story.
Necessary Context: This took place in an airplane game with a player driven economy where you can buy, sell and fly planes for cash. I own the now very rare Antonov An-225 (once the largest plane in the world) within the game and it is worth over 2.5 million cash. (that amount of in game money is VERY tough to get.)
Extra Context: Before the plane’s unfortunate destruction, almost every seasoned player had a copy of it thinking it would be one chonker cash cow, but they eventually sold their copy just after a few days of them buying it. I was one of the few people who liked being a collector and kept the plane. After the plane’s demise, the game devs took the plane off the public market and made it an ultra rare plane only craftable with its respective parts and the value skyrocketed into its current price.
The Story. One day, while deciding to take my Antonov plane out for a stroll around my home airport, many people come up to my plane asking for screenshots. This is normal for every time I pull out my plane, so blah blah blah i let them and this one guy comes up to me in his own plane asking to trade. Enter EK.
EK: yo can we trade
Me: sure
insert boring trading montage here
EK: yo how much u want for that Antonov
Me: i ain’t selling it bro it’s very valuable to me
EK: bro please
Me: bro i can’t otherwise I don’t got any good source of income
Cue the entitlement.
EK: but it’s my birthday
Me: aight then happy birthday but I still won’t give it to u
EK: and my mom has cancer
Me, dying of cringe inside: ok mate best wishes to ur mom but I’m still not giving it to u
EK: are u sure u got that plane the legit way?
Me: wdym?
EK: i know u hacked that plane give it to me or I’ll have my admin friend ban u
Me: are u legit serious rn
EK: yea ik u prob scammed someone or hacked that plane in give it right now
Me, wanting to just tease and irk him: ok fine I’ll trade it.
EK: yayyy u made my mom with cancer happy!
Me: aight man let’s just get this over with
In the trading menu, i give him a starter plane and he foolishly accepts it without checking the offer.
EK: finally I have a rare plane and ty for giving up ur 100% stolen or hacked plane
EK: bro THIS IS A CESSNA WHY DID U GIVE ME THIS THATS IT I’M REPORTING U
At this point, I leave the game.
I know, very underwhelming story. I also apologise for the bad formatting as I’m on mobile. Anyways, have a good day.
2023.06.04 10:04 Snoo18053 Recipe ideas for poorly elderly neighbour with very restricted diet
I have the most wonderful lovely neighbour. She was already celiac and dairy intolerant, which restricted her diet a lot. She would very occasionally allow herself ice cream as a treat and deal with nasty cramps and digestive issues as a result, but could never cheat with gluten as it was too dangerous. Before her dairy intolerance got bad, she loved cheese and creamy sauces, etc.
Sadly, some time ago, my neighbour was diagnosed with tongue cancer. She had to have an operation to remove part of her tongue and a lot of radiotherapy in her jaw and throat area. But she is now cancer free, which is fantastic news!
At first, with part of her tongue missing, she was interested in learning what she could and could not taste. But since treatment, she has found it a struggle to eat many things at all, unless they are soft and chopped very small (even mince can get stuck going down). Ingredients like tomatoes are also off the menu because they're so acidic that they burn her throat, which is very sensitive after radiotherapy.
She has lost a lot of weight and is miserable. She loves cooking and baking but is feeling uninspired and low as most things she tries to cook herself end up in the bin as they're too hard to swallow, or too acidic (and she can't add cream to anything to reduce that due to dairy intolerance). Now Summer is here she is very bored with vegetable soups!
She is also really struggling to get protein in her diet, so she is tired a lot. She has started eating poached eggs and small chopped prawns (but they're expensive).
Any recipe ideas for this wonderful woman would be extremely appreciated.
Restrictions summary: - Dairy free (ideas for good substitutes are welcomed too) - Gluten-free - Nothing too acidic (very sore throat) - Soft and chopped small
2023.06.04 10:02 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Recap - Festival Superlatives
| Award season is upon us. No doubt Islay's distillery managers and business owners are waiting with bated breath for the announcement of the ultra-prestigious "random guy on Reddit says" prizes. Without further ado, this year's winners. The sun sets on Bowmore (distillery in the far left) and our trip to Feis Ile 2023 Best Music: Caol Ila I am the least qualified person in the world to give out this prize, having no musical talent and not even much taste for it. But overall, Caol Ila seemed to have the best setup: a great, centrally located stage that hosted various different acts, ranging from higher-energy acts to some individual folk or blues singer types. Best Distillery Bar: Ardnahoe This island is lousy with stellar distillery bars, especially during the Feis when some distilleries pour old and rare bottles for modest prices (thank you, Bowmoe and Ardbeg). But thanks to being a Hunter Laing joint, Ardnahoe's in-house bar stood head and shoulders above the rest. The menu was a bound book that contained offerings ranging from 3 to 100 pounds a pour, and very intriguing expressions (20-plus years old) were available for single-digit prices. The bar and seating area are big, lit up by floor-to-ceiling windows with incredible views over the Sound of Islay, and the chairs are super-comfy. Could have whiled away a week here and considered it time well spent. The selection at Ardnahoe's distillery bar Best Games and Activities: Ardbeg This was an easy pick. Ardbeg was chock-full of entertainment, starting with a scavenger hunt that everyone could do to earn an extra dram. Besides that, there was a separate games area by the sea, with entry fees going to charity and the usual dram prizes. Out in the courtyard, a team member taught guests how to draw Planet Ardbeg comic characters on gift-shop merchandise. And my favorite game of all was the filling station roulette. The way it worked was that a team member had a set of small mailboxes or lockers, filled with different Ardbegs ranging from Ardbeg 10 to Ardbeg 25. Then we drew a random number from a bag and got the dram inside that locker number. Ardbeg's filling station locker game Best Whisky Tastings - Value and Variety: Kilchoman This year, some distilleries felt like they were out to maximize profit from the week, a stark change from long ago when the open days were seen as fan service and featured generous experiences meant to foster brand loyalty. So Kilchoman deserves credit for sticking to the older ways. Very nice tastings were available for reasonable 45-50-pound prices and featured half a dozen excellent drams. Meanwhile, they still did their regular, affordable core range tasting lineups, and had lots of other offerings including a farm tour where team members took guests out to drink drams in the location that gave them their name (e.g., drinking Loch Gorm by the loch). We loved our Kilchoman tasting and have heard people all week praising whichever event they attended there. Excellent setup for Kilchoman's Past, Present, and Future tasting, with pre-poured driver's drams Best Feis Ile 2023 Bottle: Lagavulin 14-year-old Armagnac Cask Finish* Let me add the critical * caveats up front: this award doesn't factor in price, and the judging panel (of one) hasn't had all the festival bottlings. But I have tried this one, Laphroaig Cairdeas 2023, Ardbeg Heavy Vapours (regular and Committee) and the single cask, Bunnahabhain Canasta and 17 y.o. Moine, Bowmore's 18 y.o., Kilchoman's 3-cask vatting, and Caol Ila 13 y.o. To be honest, the bottles were a little overwhelming as a group, especially considering their premium price points. But leaving price aside, Lagavulin's Armagnac cask experiment produced a robust, complex, sweet-and-spicy dram. If only it weren't overpriced by about 50 pounds ... Best Feis Ile Exclusives Lineup and Sale System: Bunnahabhain After Lagavulin, my second favorite Feis bottling probably was Bunnahabhain's 17-year-old Moine triple cask. Bunnahabhain wins this award because it offers visitors a variety of options, ranging from a 95-pound sherry cask offering (the cheapest Feis bottle) to some ultra-exclusive expressions like a 1998 Manzanilla and a 1989 single cask. In addition to having the most options, the bottles are available all week, lessening the silly rushes that happen with single-day releases. And the cherry on top: Bunnahabhain offered pre-packed tasting kits with a flight of Bunnahabhain 12 and the first two Feis releases, along with a glass cap and a festival pin, for 30 pounds. It was nice to have that option before splurging on a whole bottle. Best Views: Bunnahabhain and Ardnahoe (tie) Both of these distilleries have brand-new visitor centers that look across the Sound of Islay to the Paps of Jura, and it is really hard to beat. Caol Ila has a similar view, but Ardnahoe and Bunnahabhain have nicer outdoor deck areas. The stunning view across the Sound from Bunnahabhain's visitor center Best Swag Bag: Bowmore So much free stuff. Bowmore set the bar for generosity on festival day, giving everyone a branded canvas bag, two free drams (of the 12- and 15-year-old bottles), a mini-glencairn glass, and lots of little souvenirs like a postcard, pencil, small lock, a keychain carabiner, and a bung stopper coaster. A real blast from the past, hearkening back to older festivals. Best Gift Shop: Ardnahoe, Kilchoman, and Ardbeg (three-way tie) The distilleries have invested a lot in these gift shops since our last visit in 2018, and it shows. Ardnahoe gets high marks for its selection of independent bottles, the Ilicit Still cafe and whisky bar, and its fun "guess the region" nosing game. Kilchoman has lots of distillery exclusives, a great cafe, and luxurious leather seats that make me want to hang out there all day. And Ardbeg's shop has the most tongue-in-cheek decorations and a stellar cafe of its own, the Old Kiln, plus they pour tasting flights or drams for reasonable prices. Caol Ila has a huge, new shop with some impressive features, including a distillery hand-fill exclusive and a big tasting bar. But it seemed more like an outpost of Edinburgh's huge Johnnie Walker Experience, and the lack of a cafe hurt it. Best Single Whisky Tasting - Douglas Laing Rare Peatz-eria So glad I found this event a few weeks before we came. Douglas Laing's ambassador Dougal led five of us through a bravura flight culminating in a 40-year-old Caol Ila, a 25-year-old Bowmore, and two Port Ellen drams, one at 37 and one at 40 years old. When I'm at a tasting where several drams are older than me, how can it not win this prize? But there was much more to this day than whisky. We had a great conversation as everyone shared stories of how they got into the whisky hobby, and Dougal answered our questions about the industry and Douglas Laing. Rare Peatz-eria tasting Best Non-Distillery Bar: Ballygrant Inn It has the best or second-best selection on the island and the best prices. What more can I say? A must-visit for anyone who makes it to Islay. Best Evening Community Event: "Up for a Laph" Quiz Night feat. Laphroaig whiskies The open days are from 10 am - 5 pm every day, but in the evenings, community groups throw events like dances (ceilidhs), and there are other whisky tastings or mini-festivals like an Indie Whisky gathering on Tuesday night. This time around, we attended an Islay whisky and culture-based trivia night at the Gaelic center. Barry MacAffer, Laphroaig's distillery manager, took it to the next level by pouring four 2014 single casks during the quizzing. Every one of them reminded me why Laphroaig is my favorite distillery. Best Restaurant: Bowmore Hotel Restaurant The Bowmore Hotel stood out for its great service and scrumptious food, and it didn't hurt that it was around the corner from our lodgings. I emailed asking for a last-minute booking, and Peter (Junior) was responding into the wee hours of the morning confirming our time for the next night. The Isles burger with black pudding and grilled onions was quite something, and my wife loved her chicken curry. The fact that the restaurant has one of the island's best whisky bars also didn't hurt. The well-organized Bowmore Hotel bar ... oh, did I mention, there's another half on the other side of the wall? We stuck to restaurants in Bowmore on this trip, so I can't speak to dining in Port Ellen or other parts of the island. In Bowmore, Peatzeria and Indian Tandoori are also great, although Peatzeria got so busy that, on one night, we couldn't even order takeout (we tried but they were preparing a large-group order and had to turn us down). If possible, book a few dinners ahead if you come to the Feis! Best Quick Recovery Hike: Dunyvaig Castle Dunyvaig castle is a ruin nestled into a squat seaside bluff dusted with lilac, white, and gold wildflowers. Turn left to the ocean and, on clear days, distant Ireland; turn right, and there's Lagavulin. This short walk lies between Lagavulin and Ardbeg. If you take the sidewalk on the right side of the road, there'll be a right turn that leads to a paved way with three or four houses, and then a grass path at the dead end that carries you across the field while the winds blow and the birds sing. The perfect way to regain equilibrium after a warehouse tasting at either distillery. Dunyvaig castle guarding its seaward crag Complete festival recap series below: Day One, Lagavulin Day Two, Bruichladdich - but we skipped and did Bunnahabhain Day Three, Caol Ila Day Four, Laphroaig Day Five, Bowmore and Ardnahoe Bonus notes from Days One through Five Day Six, Kilchoman Day Seven - Bunnahabhain Day, but we did Lagavulin and Ardbeg warehouse tastings Day Eight, Ardbeg submitted by dreamingofislay to Scotch [link] [comments] |
I'm talking about muscle memory from playing Diablo 3. I keep pressing down on the D-Pad to open my map, right on the D-Pad to teleport back to town, the select button to open my inventory and the start button to open the game options menu... EVERY SINGLE TIME! I just can't seem to unlearn these habits lol. :)
2023.06.04 09:52 tuix00 Some noob questions
Hi people! After dying on the first day of my first attempt and then dying on the 2nd day and then dying on the 5th day, I finally made it to day 20. But now I experienced a problem for the first time, the power and water shut down. I watched some tutorials and I understand that water is not really a problem since I'm in an urban area and there's countless houses still left to loot with water in their sinks and toilets. On top of that I got 2 water coolers. However, electricity is a problem and I still can't make a rain collector, which brings me to my questions:
- I need to solve my electricity situation ASAP. I got a freezer jampacked to the brim with frozen meats and stuff. I found a generator but have no clue how to make it work. I know I have to find a magazine but I haven't yet, and there is a book store I found but in front of it there is like 50 zozos.
- I need to level up carpentry one more level to make the crappy rain collector. How does one do this? I don't really know how I upped it to level 3 to begin with. I keep reading books but they don't give xp. I don't understand. I think they just give xp multiplier but not xp. And even then, how will I purify water from the rain collector? I can't set up the "collector from above goes down > to sink" design because I don't have a terraced house, it's a normal urban house.
- How do you do absolutely anything in this game XD How will I find sustainable food? I sowed some potatoes I think 1 week ago. When my character inspects the menu it all just says ??????? as she doesn't have a clue wtf is going on, but I see them grow. I also have broccoli seeds. Should I just go wild and plant everything?
- Are weapons terrible? My character ain't exactly a shooter, but I found 3 guns and 4 boxes of ammo for the semi auto one. But I'm too scared to shot off a round because I think wherever I do it is gonna draw like 1000 zombies.
2023.06.04 09:46 dokushin FFX2 HDR -- A brief, mild review
Brief background: I'm an over-the-hill class gamer who grew up with FF's 1, "2", and "3" (those are 4 and 6 now, and yes, I know you already knew). FFX and X2 represented a glaring hole in my experience that I sought to correct over the past couple of weeks. And while I don't have much to say on FFX -- it's a great game, maybe not for me -- I have quite a bit to say about FFX2. I need the catharsis, so I'm just going to jump right in, by topic.
The Stuff Everyone Hates Just to get this out of the way, the completion business is completely bonkers. Some of the stuff guarding 100% (Via Infinito is a great example) feels like post-game screw around stuff to extend playtime, not critical do-this-or-get-a-bad-ending stuff. My theory is that that's how it was intended to work, but at some point they put more and more emphasis on that elusive completion, and it's... ugh. I mean, they make you perform a major faction choice early in the game, and one of them will then and there torpedo your "perfect run". Another bit of completion and an either-or choice of unique accessory relies on who you talk to first with no indication of it mattering. It's confusing and obtuse.
Oh, and the outfits are ridiculous. I'm not gonna spend a lot of time there. Just talking about it makes me feel a bit skeevy.
Mechanics I love job-change systems, strategic building, and the new ATB system here is a lot of fun, with shit happening everywhere. So it's easy to come in excited. Unfortunately, it all is kind of ... well, let's break it down.
- The ATB system, more and more towards the end of the game, exhibits a huge amount of queueing problems, as more and more you have full charge bars just sitting around waiting for some other shit to get done. More than once I'd finish casting something while a fat tonberry was waving his knife around, only to sit there staring at him for several seconds, and then have him attack again. Against multitarget fights (like Major Numerous) it feels particularly punishing as it seems easy for your actions to clump up after quite a few of the enemy's. Some clarity on the turn ordering would have helped a lot (perhaps an FFX-style display). As it is, it's very hard to make multipart strategies work. Which you need to do, because...
- The job system is, like, not really a job system. It's a weird beast, because most of the jobs feel like they're pretty locked in to a role, but then there isn't any credible way to benefit from more than one job at a time. (Yes, hang on, I'm getting to that.) So clearly the sphere change system is meant to pick up that slack, and the idea of strategically laying out jobs on a board to move between was really cool, up until the first time I needed to traverse the whole board (Paine's special sphere, maybe?) and it became obvious that there wasn't any cost to doing so; if you spam the sphere changes you can get everyone through all of their boards before the enemy does anything in 90% of cases. There's no other cost to changing spheres, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here, but it feels like any board with some powerful effect behind "hit all the gates" is just saying "to continue character progression you're going to have to do thirty seconds of mindless button mashing before every fight." Okay, so I leave that behind, but then, if you don't swap jobs, it's back to overrestricted roles again.
- As you progress, items try to address this, as you get accessories (and boards!) that let you access skill sets from another job. By and large these are pretty terrible, for the next few reasons (which also hurt the game as a whole).
- The jobs are clogged up with way too much useless gimmick garbage. Almost every job has one or many HP-percent attacks (think Demi), and they have the same problem they've always had, which is that against enemies it would work against you're almost always better off just, like, hitting them. The fat guys you might actually want to try this on are all immune to it, guaranteed. Every single one of these skills is a waste of design and a waste of space, and I resent having to scroll past them looking for something that might work. Except, I can't, because...
- Almost all of the stuff that isn't HP-percent is instead normal-attack-plus-status-effect. Anyone who's spent any time playing RPGs knows this issue, and it's the same one as above; against stuff that it would actually work on, you should just get to killing it; it doesn't matter if you put some weak-ass poison on it (and, despite the FFX poison being ridiculously good, the FFX2 poison is so trivial that I stopped bothering to get it off my team halfway through the game). Jobs are absolutely riddled with this shit. For half the classes, literally everything they learn that you can click on is "normal attack plus something that every strong enemy is immune to". And that's what makes the other-job accessories so bad, because getting access to a bunch of ways to pay MP to do a normal attack with a fancy "GUARD" shield over it isn't useful.
- Just to cap off these lists of useless moves, the "best" skills in jobs will frequently be some kind of instant death (there are dozens of these). Same problem as above except moreso, because even more stuff will be immune. Like, seriously, some jobs have multiple instant death attacks, and none of them ever work.
- But what about magic? I've been a black magic fan for decades. Well, the designers hate me specifically, because magic in this game sucks shit. I mean, it's absolutely awful. The black mage class learns three levels of the elemental spells and nothing else (power spells like Flare and Ultima are unlocked on sphere change boards and aren't specific to any job), and they do horrible damage. Without context maybe this isn't useful, but a max level black mage (99) with max magic (255) and the pay-more-for-stronger-spells ability (Magic Booster) can come up to Shiva, weak to fire, and hit her with the strongest fire spell right in the face, and it will do less than 2000 damage. At those stat levels normal attacks are expected to hit the 9999 cap regularly, to say nothing of -- well, I'm getting to that.
- Okay, but what about other jobs? BLM sucks, what else is there? Okay, there's White Mage -- no Holy, just heals. And... well, that's it. All the other classes are variants on fighters with only a couple gimmick exceptions (the Songstress doesn't use stats, and the Alchemist only uses items). Someone is about to bring up the Gun Mage -- the Blue Mage of FFX2, but check it out -- quite a few of the blue magics are physical, all of them are kind of bleh, and the other menu the Gun Mage gets is the ability to do a physical, strength-based attack that will do quadruple damage if you can pick the enemy's type from a list. Seriously, for physical dealers we have Fighter, Gunner, Samurai, Dark Knight, Berserker, Trainer, and Thief, explicitly strength jobs (oh, did Dark Knight fool you because it's sphere grid gives bonuses to Magic for some reason? The darkness command doesn't use strength, the spells they cast all inflict status and don't care about Magic, and also don't work, and the capstone Black Sky does magic damage but is based on your strength). Even the oddballs have no use for magic, even as a simple "attack" command (strength, natch) never goes out of style.
- Okay, but magic lets you hit elemental weaknesses? No. This is another big filler for classes -- not as much as status and fraction, but just about as useless, many physical jobs will have attack commands for each element. Why spend MP to cast a spell to hit a weakness for 2000 when you can hit a weakness with a physical attack for four times that? But by the latter parts of the game, elemental weaknesses are becoming very rare, and a bit hard to guess at, meaning playing the elements is really asking for it.
- Doesn't this mean the magic stat is useless and magic-users suck shit? Yeah, that's what I said above.
- But even most of the physical stuff gets gimmicked out of the room; there are a handful of physical abilities that ignore defense. FFX2 uses a smooth percentage based defense-based system, and higher-level mobs have more defense, so ignoring defense is a HUGE deal, especially against bosses and superbosses (for instance, an attack might do 1200 on a hard target, but ignoring defense would do more like 15,000 with the same power.) So you can try to overpower enemies with strong defense-affected attacks, and lose the game, or you can use... well, let's give it its own bullet point.
- Allow me to introduce the bread and butter of the game. The strongest, defense-ignoring, hit-everything attack. It's a specialty of the Samurai, so you know it's going to be good. What happens is, you swing your sword, and use it to... launch a little firecracker at enemies, which lands at their feet and merrily pops, dealing basically the most damage you can deal, easily growable into tens of thousands. Yeah, it's called Fireworks, and it being the strongest move in the game is ridiculous. And there's not even any contest; you can set someone up with max magic (inadvisable, see above) and magic boost and Ultima and get everything right and blow all your MP and -- you'll hit almost not quite as hard as a samurai just randomly using Fireworks. Sometimes enemies have much lower magic defense, but remember, Fireworks ignores defense. It's exactly as good against everything, it hits everything on the field. (One might note there are not any player-accesible spells that ignore magic defense.)
- Seriously. Fireworks. And yes, I know that gunpowder, and rockets, and all that jazz, and if the thing had a little more oomph to it I might like it, or if it made any sense at all, but to completely outclass actually using the sword you're holding in every possible way? FFS.
- There is one decent alternative for damage-ignoring, and it's on the Mascot sphere -- a "super" job you unlock by doing everything perfectly. They're different for each person, but they come with a pile of status and fraction attacks (...) and Yuna and Paine's can use a powerful single-target defense-ignoring attack. Arguably Fireworks is still better, but you can mix it up with these. Not that they look any cooler; the Mascot job puts each girl in a huge fluffy costume (a Moogle, a Cait Sith, and a Tonberry) with big goofy details, and the moves for all of them are all cartoony jokes. I hate when games do this -- make the strongest stuff these kinds of joke items -- but whatever.
- Ok, so, whatever, that all sucks. What about the special dressspheres? These turn one of the three into a super-powered version that chases off the other party members and replaces them with parts of their new huge form. In principle this is badass, and the idea of three pieces designed to work together is cool, and it's a powerful moment to go completely... well, whatever they're going. If the things were ever useful it'd be great. Unfortunately, they have stats that are fixed to your level, and don't gain the effect of any equipment you have, and don't get the benefit of the sphere grid you used (apart from a small HP bonus for larger ones), and their stats are not great. They accelerate at high levels, but by then you'll have accessories that increase your power dramatically, and losing those for the special spheres means they're going to struggle to do any damage at all. Oh, and they're clogged to the gills with status attacks, and instant death, and all that, of course. They woulnd't really be usable even if you didn't have to play fox-and-hound on your controller for thirty seconds to unlock changing into them.
- I'm getting too worked up, let me segue. Equipment consists entirely of two accessories per person, and any bonus effects on your sphere grid. There aren't any weapons and armor; the aesthetics (and, nominally, the stats) are built into the jobs themselves, so you're always using the same weapon. I found this really boring, especially since most of the accessories for most of the game are simple stat bonuses or immunity to one specific status effect. Later you start getting more interesting options, but then those get blown away again by the late-game stuff; massive stat bonus items and needing to use an accessory to break the damage cap. (And another to break the HP cap, if that's your thing.) You can't really get this stuff intrinsically, creating a "tax" on a resource you only have two of. Notably, the special spheres I mentioned above can learn to break the damage cap automatically, which is hilarious because typically it doesn't matter, they can't do 9999 anyway. And if that wasn't enough, you have to unlock that ability with FFX-flavored finding key items in random places everywhere.
- Areas? The outdoor environments are beautiful and varied, and while the new "jumping" (read: "hold B to keep going") is a bit cheesy and obstructionist at times the areas are interesting to navigate and explore. Of course, then you go in a dungeon and everything is murky square corridors forever. It's kind of a jarring change.
- Oh, that reminds me. You know how sometimes in RPGs they'll make dungeons that have just ridiculously long, featureless corridors, obviously there just to make you get in more fights? Via Infinito is 100 floors of that, and it's an absolute grind, and it's needed for completion. I mean, this thing is worse than the Chrysler Building, or the Karma Palace. It's just... ugh.
Okay, I'm tired of talking about mechanics. Basically, they suck, the game hates the Magic stat and anyone who wants to cast a spell, there's one ability out of all the abilities on every job that matters and it throws a little party for the enemy before breaking the game over your knee. Hope you like fireworks.
Story The story is told from a unique perspective and with kind of a unique flavor. Some of that flavor I absolutely hate -- the music for most of the game just kind of grates on me, some of the characters are just too much, and things stay always a little silly -- but that's not bad, it's more a matter of preference. I think that writing this story was a fun experiment. By the time it had concluded I feel like it lost track of what it was doing and left some stuff just kind of hanging, but all in all I enjoyed it. It's frustrating because so many elements and details are locked behind impossible-to-predict random actions, triggers, and areas, so to see it all you need a walkthrough and a spreadsheet, which really kills the flow of the story itself.
** Creature Creator **
This -- where you capture fiends and make them fight in arena battles -- is completely disconnected from the rest of the game, but is a lot of fun. I enjoyed trying different strategies with different creatures, and since you can customize their abilities by feeding them items it helped to recapture some of that tactical complexity that I feel is missing with the specialized jobs and no equipment. Really, I wish it wasn't there, because I would have been done with this game 100 hours earlier, but it was fun to mess around with.
The stories you unlock from releasing monsters are all basically comedy skits, but some are entertaining and it's fun to get a glimpse into the lives of random people.
** Other **
I really enjoyed most of the battle quips and the quotes that go with the various jobs, although sometimes they were a bit forced. This, though:
- "Duck soup!"
- "Duck what?"
is the funniest thing I've heard all year and I'm not kidding.
** Overall **
You know already just from the word count above. I found the story inoffensive and some of the side activities fun, but the mechanical aspects of this RPG feel very... I don't know, amateurish, like they were put together by someone who has never actually played an RPG and confronted the harsh reality of strong enemies being immune to things. Between that, and the domination of Fireworks, and the deep hostility to magic, there was never really anything I was excited about learning or developing. I'd get a new job and I'd know already what I'd find -- more pointless attacks and a couple of good auto-abilities. There was precious little to look forward to getting, meaning the strategic element I crave in my number-based games was almost entirely missing. It promises Tactics and delivers Mystic Quest. (No shade, FFMQ had amazing music and I really kind of like it, even if it's a wafer-thin game.)
I'd love to discuss any of this in the comments with anyone with different experiences. Having put the game to rest, in retrospect it felt... draining, more than anything. A billion things to keep track of over tiny little fractions of percent of progress, dozens and dozens and dozens of "attack-plus-this" that don't matter, and probably the worst black magic nerf of any FF game. Pretty disappointing overall.
2023.06.04 09:43 personman44 Unetbootin for Linux not properly creating a bootable USB, and I cannot boot with it. Possibly a permissions error?
I'm trying to do this on a Fedora 37 KDE virtual machine to be able to boot into FreeDOS and update the BIOS. This distro has SELinux implemented, though I'm not sure if it's the cause. PC is
Dell XPS 8500 from 2012, and
this is the update I'm trying to do.
I have been following
this and
this video (both doing the same exact thing pretty much) to use
UNetbootin to create a bootable USB to boot into
FreeDOS and update the BIOS of my decade old XPS 8500 PC. For PCs this old, you have to do this.
Dell and the videos show people formatting the USB to FAT32, so I did that too, and then used UNetbootin exactly like they did.
However, there's something that happens in all these videos that isn't happening for me, and it's causing the booting to fail. At
5:12 of this video and
4:00 of this video, after they use UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, the USB has a couple of files such as libcom32.c32, libutil.c32, menu.c32, syslinux.cfg, ubninit, and ubnkern. However, my USB only has ubnkern after using UNetbootin, and nothing else.
Also in the videos, when they click OK and let UNetbootin do the operation, they see a progress bar load, and then click exit on an installation complete popup. For me, I see the progress bar at 0% for a split second, and then the popup just disappears and the app closes.
I'm wondering if it's a permissions issue. It's pointed out in the first of those 2 videos at this timestamp that UNetbootin doesn't launch properly all the time, so he forces it to launch properly using sudo QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 unetbootin.
I had to use that command, because opening UNetbootin the normal way gives this popup titled "Run as root - KDE su"
```The action you requested needs root privileges.Please enter root's password below or click Ignore to continue with your current privileges"
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
Password: [Password Textbox]``
If I type the password, it gives me this error:
```Permission denied. Possibly incorrect password, please try again. On some systems, you need to be in a special group (often: wheel) to use this program
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\''' ```
If I click the ignore button, it gives this error popup titled "Error -KDE su"
```Cannot execute command 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
(Not sure if I got the apostrophes/quote symbols right. It doesn't let me copy the messages on any of these popups)
I can't try rufus instead because that's only available on Windows, and I'm on Linux. Any ideas on why this isn't working?

2023.06.04 09:41 gingerbread_cookie19 Question about the Co-op invite code
I play the GOG version of the game on Linux, the problem is, you apparently need GOG Galaxy for being able to use the invite code functionality in the Co-op menu, but this software is only available for Windows. Any solutions?
