My current computer allows me to run up to 13B models and their speed is ok, and I am evaluating perspectives of getting a new system, I am not planning to run it on a GPU.
My question is, is it even reliable way to run big models on CPU? My friend tried to run 30B model on his system with enough RAM, but somewhat older than current processor (5 y.o. Ryzen 3), and got about 1 token every 30 seconds.
If it is reliable way to run models locally I could go for somewhat higher end PC, like i9-13900 + 128 RAM, if it would be slow anyways (slower than 1 token per 2-5 seconds) I would rather go for something modest, like 13400/13600 and less ram.
It would be nice to add to FAQ information like "time to generate 1 token on i5-11400":
3b - 0.2 sec
7b - 0.5 sec
13b - 1.2 sec
30b - (20 sec ?)
60b - ...

Straight out I would say this turned out so much different than I ever expected and also it has been taking days of work. All of which enjoyable, I love building stuff, but building a cooling system from scratch needs quite some precision work :)
This is one of my first post here, so I hope it all turns out well!
It all started when a friend gave me his old GPU - a strix gtx 970 4gb OC. And that cascaded in getting all other components. I should note that this is not the best option for a GPU in a fanless system, but it's what I got :) To be hones, it ran VERY quiet with original cooling, but... I disassembled it already , there is no going back haha.
CPU is a ryzen 5 3600
MB is mini ITX GIGABYTE B450I AORUS PRO Wi-FiBeQuiet pure power 11 500W . it has a fan, but have seen it spinning only a few times and it's inaudible :)
18gb ram, 1tb samsung nvma and so on, nothing special on this front, just needed some parts to make it run.
All temps are in Celsius! :)
At my work ( I repair clinical equipment) I got a hold of these beauties from a device in one laboratory.
I thought I would need only two of them and have the rest for another project - how wrong was I haha

My first idea was to directly press the cpu against a block of aluminum and the big heatsink.Unfortunately the 2 prototypes I tried, didn't transfer the head fast enough to the big headsing and the CPU would get hot really fast during a stress test.(I glued the nuts with fast glue and baking soda. It got so hard and strong that I had trouble removing it after that! haha )The first 2 tries looked like that:

At this point I was still under the disillusion, that this would be a quick job, done in a few hours. I lough at myself when I think back at how I imagined all this would go...Trying to build and cut everything on the fly, every whole was on the wrong spot, I kept on breaking drills and taps , while making holes and threads...After the first few uncecesfull attepmts I realised I need to take my time to work on every single piece of it slowly and measure everything better if I wanted to go anywhere with this.At this point I still didn't know if I would be able to cool the CPU, much less the GPU.The CPU is 65W and the GPU is twice as much and probably sucking even more power at max load.
Next I decided to use heat pipes, but instead of ordering some and figuring out how to attach them to the CPU die, I decided to repurpose an older cooler master CPU cooler I had around ( also a donation from a friend ) It was for an older intel CPU, so I had to create a mount for it for my AM4 platform :)
So I began and 2 hours later ...

I drilled holes for half of the pipes and stuck them inside the radiator, the other ones I bent and pressed against the face of the other radiator. At this point I am using two of them.Bending the heatpipes without a proper tool is a mess.I ended up using the neck of a bottle of wine.....I wouldn't go too deep in this topic hahahahTo my surprise it was working!!!! I managed to get to max 80C under stress. :)
At this point I was feeling a bit more optimistic and started working on the cooling for the gpu.This time I didn't even bother with trying to cool the gpu without headpipes, so I did the same as with the CPU - repurposed some heatpipes... or you could say - Destroyed a perfectly fine working cooling hehe -

At this point I was much more careful with the holes I drilled.I have a few jars with old bolts and nuts left from my grandfather - they hold everything in this project. Whenever I needed any size of anything, I found it in there. And everytime I was thankful to him! <3 Love you grandpop!

The first time I ran the Pc with the new GPU cooling, and started stress testing it - the computer turned off without a warning! It obviously overheated.I was a bit disappointed for a while, until I remembered the VRMs have just a small heatsink above them and no fan to blow air on it at the moment...So I cut two big sheets of 3mm aluminum and stuck them on the chips with a thermal pad.That did the trick , but they got around 95C while playing games.I had to address this.
Next I got more presents from a friend - a flat heatpipe from a laptop cooling and an old GPU cooling ( heatpipes and radiator)I should have made more photos of the creation, because it is so funny :) Nowhere near good looking.I put a 2mm copper plate on the vrm chips the laptop heatpipe, sandwiched with a sheet of aluminum plate. The flat heatpipe curves around the gpu body, goes to the other side and there I pressed the other end between another sheet of aluminum and the other gpu cooler.

This did the trick - VRM are at 62C during gaming. That's fine for me. :)Holding one end with a zip tie... At this point I have no aestetic goals for the inside :D
Building everything together around the gpu is a step by step process in specific order so that everything comes together... I had to build and take everything apart or rework it in order to have access to all the bolds and nuts holding the whole thing together.
When I play Horizon : Forbbiden west, I get 50-60C CPU, 62 VRMs and around 90CI seem to remember that on the build before the vrm upgrade the gpu was not getting hotter than 85C... Will have to work on that more.
There is an original, thin black alu plate on the back side of the GPU that get really HOT. I can't seem to find anything directly touching to it, aside from one small chip ( don't know what its for) with a 2-3mm thick thermal pad on it. I am thinking of changing this thin back plate with a much wider and thicker one. I have some 3-4 mm sheets.That's one of the next steps, when I feel motivated, and after that I will start thinking about making a wooden box for the whole thing. I have a few Teak wood planks.And just for the sake of it am wandering if I should add one fan at the bottom of the box just in caseMaybe an Noctua nf-a12x15, turning at very low RPMs... will see about that :)
I don't know how heavy it is. It's still not in one piece and stays in place thanks to my oldschool sci-fi book collection :)

My father’s godmother (in her 90’s and no direct family of her own) will leave him in her will 4 properties. 3 of them in the village (one of these her old home, the other two rentals) and a 3 apartment building in the beach. Note that all these properties are OLD, meaning no modernization or any type of construction were ever made on them since the 60’s (the rented properties have very low rent). My parents are the main caretakers of the godmother and as they are both retired, they have time to take her from the nursing home she is in to some walks, to the beach, to any family occasion, etc. My father is also the main executor of her properties right now.
So, my parents had a hard working life, we never had much money but we were never in need, which means that my parents never really “lived”. No trips, no big holidays, nothing for themselves, ever. As my father is not direct family, if and when the will will be opened, he will have to pay a big amount in inheritance tax (which they don’t have the money to pay right now) and also if the houses pass to my fathers name and he decides to sell any of them, he will have to pay tax on them too. Well, this all can be avoided if they decide to sell now, while the godmother is still alive, as in my country the law states that houses purchased before 1989 are exempt of that tax, and as my father his the main executor, he has the legal power to do so in her name.
I suggested that they sell the two rentals to avoid paying inheritance tax on them and the tax for selling, and invest that money in renovating the beach apartments, which will them become holiday rentals. This rentals would not only give them comfort and means to properly enjoy their retirement but also help me and my sister start our own families with more financial safety.
The problem is, they don’t want to sell anything, saying they want to recuperate all houses (they don’t have money nor time for that - father is 70) because it will all be for me and sister in the future and also because godmother is still alive. But as is, the old houses will be worth less and the ones we want to recuperate are gonna need more work, so each day the situation doesn’t move, we are effectively loosing money and more importantly, time.
AITA for wanting my parents to make a smart decision that can put our family in a stable financial position?

I remember playing a racing game at a demo kiosk at Incredible Universe. It was a system I had at the time, not SNES or Genesis, definitely PC, PS, or Saturn graphics (or any other off system at the time)
There were three types of race courses. One was a medieval fantasy universe with castles and dragons. One was a course that went over a bunch of sweets like giant cakes or donuts. One was meant to look futuristic. Dunno if these courses were demo specific. But I remember being in awe with the graphics at the time.

In my research of samples for many of my favorite songs, the discovery of this song’s Genesis sample of 1973’s ‘Dancing with the Moonlit Knight’ has got to be one of the most obscure and among the most creative and unlikely I’ve found. I had to listen to the original a few times to figure out what they grabbed.

Anyways a couple years back I went through a real hard time surrounding a real manipulative relationship with this one person, I’ve long since been cut off from them but it took a while to stop hating myself for things going wrong with them, regular degular bullshit etc.
I definitely don’t care about what happened between us now and if u ask me now I don’t feel like I’m a bad person, but it feels like these events hit an emotional switch in my brain. Like even after I got over my thoughts surrounding that person, my brain stayed going crazy, just about other things. I developed pretty bad dpdr for a bit over a year which I’m finally truly overcoming but unfortunately that comes with facing a lot of this pain head on. I have these weird intrusive thoughts, feel so disconnected from everybody, and am losing so much motivation. I’ve been having bad emotional outbursts which I really hate, I am very proud of being calm and content in the face of adversity but my temper has gotten really short because of how sad and mad I am all the time. And Oddly enough on top of this, I still think about that one person everyday, but it’s like they just force themselves in my head, and I usually just blow it off cause I don’t really care. With everything else going on in my mind I genuinely don’t worry about that person because I have been over them for so long but somehow they still pop up in my head everyday. And sometimes I dream about them, which can really mess me up a whole day or even a week for me. They were extremely significant to me at the time but it has been YEARSSS
I just don’t even know what this is I don’t understand how I can get over something from my past but I can’t recover emotionally from it and how my brain still sometimes holds it over my head. I don’t even know what trauma is what any of this stuff is I’m just hoping someone would maybe know what the best direction to take myself in is in terms of what I should work on to deal with these problems. I doubt I have trauma or anything I just have 0 clue where to go.

hi all :) i need some recs on choosing a bike. i just got into bike riding and was having a hard time deciding/finding what bike to get. also, i’m 5’0” so it’s hard to find something comfortable. i kinda need a bike that’d double as a commuter but also something that can handle some rough terrain. and maybe something with a few speeds. i love fixies for the frame look but hate the fixed gear part. should i get a fixie but add a 3 speed internal hub? sorry i’m just completely new to this and feel helpless. budget is maybe ~$300. thanks in advance

I believe I’ve been in the dreaded 4 month sleep regression for a couple of weeks now. It started off with him having bad naps for a week, then bad naps and a couple of sleeps where he would wake up every 2 hours. Now I’m in this stage where he sleeps around 9/10pm and wakes up around 1am lifting his legs and banging them. He then continues to do this the rest of the night.
We’ve started to implement a night routine where we give him a full feed and bring him up to his bassinet (around 8/9pm) and read to him until he falls asleep around . This is also usually a battle - some nights he goes to bed right away, some nights he fights it for an hour or two. After he falls asleep he seems to always wake up at 1am and bangs his legs. The thing is he doesn’t seem awake, his eyes are usually closed. This is when I give him his pacifier again and he’ll go back to sleep for another 30-60 mins. Then usually around 2/3am we wake up for a feed. I’ll then put him back to bed and 30 minutes later he’s banging his feet again every 30-60 minutes until 6-7am.
My question is, whyyyy? Haha, no but is there anything I can do? I feel like I’m awake all night giving him his pacifier until it’s time to hand him off to my husband around 6/7am. I forgot to mention that he’ll be 4 months in about 10 days. I heard that it’s too early to sleep train so I’m not really sure what I can do to help. Im currently breastfeeding and pumping so my husband is able to help out with bottle feedings.
Not sure if his nap schedule is relevant but he takes about ~3 naps a day. First nap is about 3 hours long, second nap is 1-2 hours and third nap usually only lasts 30 minutes.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

• You can replace Saki team by any weapon that having buff atk (Lin, Fiona), or can reset skill (Fiona, A6 Lin, Icarus). I don't have chance to test that Rubilia mind control can be use in this event, pls someone confirm.
  
• Spam skill to reduce relics cooldown.
  
• If you don't have any weapon that help you spam skill, let choose long CD relics and do leave-join event, they will reset cooldown of relics for you
  
• Save your strongest weapon for 2nd and 8th level, the mob heal so relics tactics not work here.

Hello all! I’ve been on 0.025% tret since mid-2020, grade 1-2 acne. Did short contact therapy for a solid 3 years (tolerance built up to 2 hours every night), and recently upgraded to overnight application with a Micro gel formula.
My acne has been manageable - but lately, whether it’s hormones or the weather or purge from the new tret formulation, I’ve been needing some extra care. Over the past few months I’ve added in Niacinamide and Azelaic acid, as well as AHA and BHA.

The progress is there, but it’s slow. And a bit too slow - each month around my period I get a few new bumps. I get why it’s slow, most of the products I’m using are quite mild. Which is why I’m wondering - would introducing Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant bring about drastic change? Or should I just stick to the slow but mild routine?
I’ve not yet been able to find a satisfactory comparison between PC and Cosrx yet - most are either using it just for clogged pores and are not on tret.

I'm trying to do this on a Fedora 37 KDE virtual machine. This distro has SELinux implemented, though I'm not sure if it's the cause. PC is Dell XPS 8500 from 2012, and this is the update I'm trying to do.
I have been following this and this video (both doing the same exact thing pretty much) to use UNetbootin to create a bootable USB to boot into FreeDOS and update the BIOS of my decade old XPS 8500 PC. For PCs this old, you have to do this. Dell and the videos show people formatting the USB to FAT32, so I did that too, and then used UNetbootin exactly like they did.
However, there's something that happens in all these videos that isn't happening for me, and it's causing the booting to fail. At 5:12 of this video and 4:00 of this video, after they use UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, the USB has a couple of files such as libcom32.c32, libutil.c32, menu.c32, syslinux.cfg, ubninit, and ubnkern. However, my USB only has ubnkern after using UNetbootin, and nothing else.
Also in the videos, when they click OK and let UNetbootin do the operation, they see a progress bar load, and then click exit on an installation complete popup. For me, I see the progress bar at 0% for a split second, and then the popup just disappears and the app closes.
I'm wondering if it's a permissions issue. It's pointed out in the first of those 2 videos at this timestamp that UNetbootin doesn't launch properly all the time, so he forces it to launch properly using sudo QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 unetbootin.
I had to use that command, because opening UNetbootin the normal way gives this popup titled "Run as root - KDE su"
