(Part 2/2) I went on two trips with a friend and caught feelings. Now she’s moving and might get back with her old bf
…I left and she ended up going to Madrid because she had a week until she started at her new job and wanted to see some old friends and a professor at her old university to ask about starting a PHD program that the professor had previously invited her to. We kept in very close contact for a few days and then started talking a bit less frequently. The same thing happened after New York. I didn’t really mind it either because I was really busy with my class and I didn’t want us to get bored of each other like I did with my high school girlfriend when trying to do long distance.
Well I noticed that she hadn’t posted on her Instagram story in a few days which was weird because she usually posts every day when she’s traveling. I opened up her profile to see that none of her story highlights were there. The only explanation I could come up with was that she blocked me from her story. The next day she posts a picture of her at a roof top bar and a guy comments on it something along the lines of “always great to see you.”
She had mentioned that she had some sort of a relationship with a Peruvian guy while she lived in Madrid. The guy who commented that ended up being Peruvian.
We had went back and forth texting every day for a week after leaving Rome and then she didn’t respond for about 4 days. The four days lined up roughly with when the picture would have been taken so I assume halfway through her trip to Madrid she started hanging out with him a lot. She finally responded the same night as the post and asked how my class was going and told me that she was back in Italy and about to start work, I was a little mad that she had blocked me from her story and went right to hanging out with this guy after I thought we had a really special time. I was also really stressed from the workload of my class so I waited a few days until I was level headed to respond. When I responded I didn’t mention any of it. I asked how her job was going and said that I had a really long drive home from my class in a couple of days and would love to call and catch up with her on the drive (she mentioned before I left Italy that she wanted to talk on the phone with me a lot over the summer).
That was three days ago and she never answered. I tried calling anyways because I called up a bunch of my friends on my ride home and she didn’t answer. I still haven’t heard anything from her and I’m still blocked from her story.
I’m starting to think that with the PHD coming up she’s hedging her bets that a relationship with the Peruvian guy in the same city makes a lot more sense. I understand that but my feelings are hurt if that’s the case. We had such a good time and I feel like I connected with her better than anyone I had ever met. I guess all I can do is wait and see what happens. I was hoping to visit her at the end of the summer at her new job like she had asked me at the end of our last trip but if she doesn’t respond for days at a time and I can’t see her stories then I guess that won’t happen.
From the time she mentioned her old high school boyfriend in New York, to when she asked me to either stay or take her with me back to america, and now to her hanging out with this Peruvian guy again, I get the feeling that she really has no idea who to trust or what to do with her life. I completely understand that because I felt the same way about just about every relationship from the start of college until I went to New York with her, but I can’t help but be sad by this because I have genuine feelings for her and I find it hard to believe other guys she might be giving similar consideration to all feel the same way.
The silly thing is that for the first time in college I felt I had a purpose for what I was doing. I landed an internship with a guy who promised me the ability to work from home if I stayed with them after the internship and took a CAD course. I have an EU passport and although I didn’t mention this to her (beyond saying that I wanted to work remotely and travel after I graduated) I genuinely wanted to bring her with me. I felt a genuine desire outside of simply not being a failure to do well in school for the first time. I don’t know how to feel about anything now and am honestly spiraling a bit.
Now I’m back in my hometown for the summer and seeing all of my friends who never broke up with their high school girlfriends. I’ve felt superior to them for a while now because I thought I had some sort of a future with this amazing foreign girl who was objectively way more attractive than their girlfriends and in my opinion a lot more fun. Now I just feel lonely looking at all of them. I guess I’m asking what sort of mindset I should approach this whole thing with. My plan for months had been to try to land a remote job and ask her to join me for a trip and then go from there. If she won’t even talk to me regularly or let me see her story I guess that’s out the window. She was a big part of the direction I wanted to take in life and honestly had become my main motivation. The idea of changing my mindset is scary because the time before we started those phone calls where she taught me Italian was a pretty dark time. How should I approach this whole situation in terms of mindset and actions?

2023.06.04 09:46 dokushin FFX2 HDR -- A brief, mild review
Brief background: I'm an over-the-hill class gamer who grew up with FF's 1, "2", and "3" (those are 4 and 6 now, and yes, I know you already knew). FFX and X2 represented a glaring hole in my experience that I sought to correct over the past couple of weeks. And while I don't have much to say on FFX -- it's a great game, maybe not for me -- I have quite a bit to say about FFX2. I need the catharsis, so I'm just going to jump right in, by topic.
The Stuff Everyone Hates Just to get this out of the way, the completion business is completely bonkers. Some of the stuff guarding 100% (Via Infinito is a great example) feels like post-game screw around stuff to extend playtime, not critical do-this-or-get-a-bad-ending stuff. My theory is that that's how it was intended to work, but at some point they put more and more emphasis on that elusive completion, and it's... ugh. I mean, they make you perform a major faction choice early in the game, and one of them will then and there torpedo your "perfect run". Another bit of completion and an either-or choice of unique accessory relies on who you talk to first with no indication of it mattering. It's confusing and obtuse.
Oh, and the outfits are ridiculous. I'm not gonna spend a lot of time there. Just talking about it makes me feel a bit skeevy.
Mechanics I love job-change systems, strategic building, and the new ATB system here is a lot of fun, with shit happening everywhere. So it's easy to come in excited. Unfortunately, it all is kind of ... well, let's break it down.
- The ATB system, more and more towards the end of the game, exhibits a huge amount of queueing problems, as more and more you have full charge bars just sitting around waiting for some other shit to get done. More than once I'd finish casting something while a fat tonberry was waving his knife around, only to sit there staring at him for several seconds, and then have him attack again. Against multitarget fights (like Major Numerous) it feels particularly punishing as it seems easy for your actions to clump up after quite a few of the enemy's. Some clarity on the turn ordering would have helped a lot (perhaps an FFX-style display). As it is, it's very hard to make multipart strategies work. Which you need to do, because...
- The job system is, like, not really a job system. It's a weird beast, because most of the jobs feel like they're pretty locked in to a role, but then there isn't any credible way to benefit from more than one job at a time. (Yes, hang on, I'm getting to that.) So clearly the sphere change system is meant to pick up that slack, and the idea of strategically laying out jobs on a board to move between was really cool, up until the first time I needed to traverse the whole board (Paine's special sphere, maybe?) and it became obvious that there wasn't any cost to doing so; if you spam the sphere changes you can get everyone through all of their boards before the enemy does anything in 90% of cases. There's no other cost to changing spheres, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here, but it feels like any board with some powerful effect behind "hit all the gates" is just saying "to continue character progression you're going to have to do thirty seconds of mindless button mashing before every fight." Okay, so I leave that behind, but then, if you don't swap jobs, it's back to overrestricted roles again.
- As you progress, items try to address this, as you get accessories (and boards!) that let you access skill sets from another job. By and large these are pretty terrible, for the next few reasons (which also hurt the game as a whole).
- The jobs are clogged up with way too much useless gimmick garbage. Almost every job has one or many HP-percent attacks (think Demi), and they have the same problem they've always had, which is that against enemies it would work against you're almost always better off just, like, hitting them. The fat guys you might actually want to try this on are all immune to it, guaranteed. Every single one of these skills is a waste of design and a waste of space, and I resent having to scroll past them looking for something that might work. Except, I can't, because...
- Almost all of the stuff that isn't HP-percent is instead normal-attack-plus-status-effect. Anyone who's spent any time playing RPGs knows this issue, and it's the same one as above; against stuff that it would actually work on, you should just get to killing it; it doesn't matter if you put some weak-ass poison on it (and, despite the FFX poison being ridiculously good, the FFX2 poison is so trivial that I stopped bothering to get it off my team halfway through the game). Jobs are absolutely riddled with this shit. For half the classes, literally everything they learn that you can click on is "normal attack plus something that every strong enemy is immune to". And that's what makes the other-job accessories so bad, because getting access to a bunch of ways to pay MP to do a normal attack with a fancy "GUARD" shield over it isn't useful.
- Just to cap off these lists of useless moves, the "best" skills in jobs will frequently be some kind of instant death (there are dozens of these). Same problem as above except moreso, because even more stuff will be immune. Like, seriously, some jobs have multiple instant death attacks, and none of them ever work.
- But what about magic? I've been a black magic fan for decades. Well, the designers hate me specifically, because magic in this game sucks shit. I mean, it's absolutely awful. The black mage class learns three levels of the elemental spells and nothing else (power spells like Flare and Ultima are unlocked on sphere change boards and aren't specific to any job), and they do horrible damage. Without context maybe this isn't useful, but a max level black mage (99) with max magic (255) and the pay-more-for-stronger-spells ability (Magic Booster) can come up to Shiva, weak to fire, and hit her with the strongest fire spell right in the face, and it will do less than 2000 damage. At those stat levels normal attacks are expected to hit the 9999 cap regularly, to say nothing of -- well, I'm getting to that.
- Okay, but what about other jobs? BLM sucks, what else is there? Okay, there's White Mage -- no Holy, just heals. And... well, that's it. All the other classes are variants on fighters with only a couple gimmick exceptions (the Songstress doesn't use stats, and the Alchemist only uses items). Someone is about to bring up the Gun Mage -- the Blue Mage of FFX2, but check it out -- quite a few of the blue magics are physical, all of them are kind of bleh, and the other menu the Gun Mage gets is the ability to do a physical, strength-based attack that will do quadruple damage if you can pick the enemy's type from a list. Seriously, for physical dealers we have Fighter, Gunner, Samurai, Dark Knight, Berserker, Trainer, and Thief, explicitly strength jobs (oh, did Dark Knight fool you because it's sphere grid gives bonuses to Magic for some reason? The darkness command doesn't use strength, the spells they cast all inflict status and don't care about Magic, and also don't work, and the capstone Black Sky does magic damage but is based on your strength). Even the oddballs have no use for magic, even as a simple "attack" command (strength, natch) never goes out of style.
- Okay, but magic lets you hit elemental weaknesses? No. This is another big filler for classes -- not as much as status and fraction, but just about as useless, many physical jobs will have attack commands for each element. Why spend MP to cast a spell to hit a weakness for 2000 when you can hit a weakness with a physical attack for four times that? But by the latter parts of the game, elemental weaknesses are becoming very rare, and a bit hard to guess at, meaning playing the elements is really asking for it.
- Doesn't this mean the magic stat is useless and magic-users suck shit? Yeah, that's what I said above.
- But even most of the physical stuff gets gimmicked out of the room; there are a handful of physical abilities that ignore defense. FFX2 uses a smooth percentage based defense-based system, and higher-level mobs have more defense, so ignoring defense is a HUGE deal, especially against bosses and superbosses (for instance, an attack might do 1200 on a hard target, but ignoring defense would do more like 15,000 with the same power.) So you can try to overpower enemies with strong defense-affected attacks, and lose the game, or you can use... well, let's give it its own bullet point.
- Allow me to introduce the bread and butter of the game. The strongest, defense-ignoring, hit-everything attack. It's a specialty of the Samurai, so you know it's going to be good. What happens is, you swing your sword, and use it to... launch a little firecracker at enemies, which lands at their feet and merrily pops, dealing basically the most damage you can deal, easily growable into tens of thousands. Yeah, it's called Fireworks, and it being the strongest move in the game is ridiculous. And there's not even any contest; you can set someone up with max magic (inadvisable, see above) and magic boost and Ultima and get everything right and blow all your MP and -- you'll hit almost not quite as hard as a samurai just randomly using Fireworks. Sometimes enemies have much lower magic defense, but remember, Fireworks ignores defense. It's exactly as good against everything, it hits everything on the field. (One might note there are not any player-accesible spells that ignore magic defense.)
- Seriously. Fireworks. And yes, I know that gunpowder, and rockets, and all that jazz, and if the thing had a little more oomph to it I might like it, or if it made any sense at all, but to completely outclass actually using the sword you're holding in every possible way? FFS.
- There is one decent alternative for damage-ignoring, and it's on the Mascot sphere -- a "super" job you unlock by doing everything perfectly. They're different for each person, but they come with a pile of status and fraction attacks (...) and Yuna and Paine's can use a powerful single-target defense-ignoring attack. Arguably Fireworks is still better, but you can mix it up with these. Not that they look any cooler; the Mascot job puts each girl in a huge fluffy costume (a Moogle, a Cait Sith, and a Tonberry) with big goofy details, and the moves for all of them are all cartoony jokes. I hate when games do this -- make the strongest stuff these kinds of joke items -- but whatever.
- Ok, so, whatever, that all sucks. What about the special dressspheres? These turn one of the three into a super-powered version that chases off the other party members and replaces them with parts of their new huge form. In principle this is badass, and the idea of three pieces designed to work together is cool, and it's a powerful moment to go completely... well, whatever they're going. If the things were ever useful it'd be great. Unfortunately, they have stats that are fixed to your level, and don't gain the effect of any equipment you have, and don't get the benefit of the sphere grid you used (apart from a small HP bonus for larger ones), and their stats are not great. They accelerate at high levels, but by then you'll have accessories that increase your power dramatically, and losing those for the special spheres means they're going to struggle to do any damage at all. Oh, and they're clogged to the gills with status attacks, and instant death, and all that, of course. They woulnd't really be usable even if you didn't have to play fox-and-hound on your controller for thirty seconds to unlock changing into them.
- I'm getting too worked up, let me segue. Equipment consists entirely of two accessories per person, and any bonus effects on your sphere grid. There aren't any weapons and armor; the aesthetics (and, nominally, the stats) are built into the jobs themselves, so you're always using the same weapon. I found this really boring, especially since most of the accessories for most of the game are simple stat bonuses or immunity to one specific status effect. Later you start getting more interesting options, but then those get blown away again by the late-game stuff; massive stat bonus items and needing to use an accessory to break the damage cap. (And another to break the HP cap, if that's your thing.) You can't really get this stuff intrinsically, creating a "tax" on a resource you only have two of. Notably, the special spheres I mentioned above can learn to break the damage cap automatically, which is hilarious because typically it doesn't matter, they can't do 9999 anyway. And if that wasn't enough, you have to unlock that ability with FFX-flavored finding key items in random places everywhere.
- Areas? The outdoor environments are beautiful and varied, and while the new "jumping" (read: "hold B to keep going") is a bit cheesy and obstructionist at times the areas are interesting to navigate and explore. Of course, then you go in a dungeon and everything is murky square corridors forever. It's kind of a jarring change.
- Oh, that reminds me. You know how sometimes in RPGs they'll make dungeons that have just ridiculously long, featureless corridors, obviously there just to make you get in more fights? Via Infinito is 100 floors of that, and it's an absolute grind, and it's needed for completion. I mean, this thing is worse than the Chrysler Building, or the Karma Palace. It's just... ugh.
Okay, I'm tired of talking about mechanics. Basically, they suck, the game hates the Magic stat and anyone who wants to cast a spell, there's one ability out of all the abilities on every job that matters and it throws a little party for the enemy before breaking the game over your knee. Hope you like fireworks.
Story The story is told from a unique perspective and with kind of a unique flavor. Some of that flavor I absolutely hate -- the music for most of the game just kind of grates on me, some of the characters are just too much, and things stay always a little silly -- but that's not bad, it's more a matter of preference. I think that writing this story was a fun experiment. By the time it had concluded I feel like it lost track of what it was doing and left some stuff just kind of hanging, but all in all I enjoyed it. It's frustrating because so many elements and details are locked behind impossible-to-predict random actions, triggers, and areas, so to see it all you need a walkthrough and a spreadsheet, which really kills the flow of the story itself.
** Creature Creator **
This -- where you capture fiends and make them fight in arena battles -- is completely disconnected from the rest of the game, but is a lot of fun. I enjoyed trying different strategies with different creatures, and since you can customize their abilities by feeding them items it helped to recapture some of that tactical complexity that I feel is missing with the specialized jobs and no equipment. Really, I wish it wasn't there, because I would have been done with this game 100 hours earlier, but it was fun to mess around with.
The stories you unlock from releasing monsters are all basically comedy skits, but some are entertaining and it's fun to get a glimpse into the lives of random people.
** Other **
I really enjoyed most of the battle quips and the quotes that go with the various jobs, although sometimes they were a bit forced. This, though:
- "Duck soup!"
- "Duck what?"
is the funniest thing I've heard all year and I'm not kidding.
** Overall **
You know already just from the word count above. I found the story inoffensive and some of the side activities fun, but the mechanical aspects of this RPG feel very... I don't know, amateurish, like they were put together by someone who has never actually played an RPG and confronted the harsh reality of strong enemies being immune to things. Between that, and the domination of Fireworks, and the deep hostility to magic, there was never really anything I was excited about learning or developing. I'd get a new job and I'd know already what I'd find -- more pointless attacks and a couple of good auto-abilities. There was precious little to look forward to getting, meaning the strategic element I crave in my number-based games was almost entirely missing. It promises Tactics and delivers Mystic Quest. (No shade, FFMQ had amazing music and I really kind of like it, even if it's a wafer-thin game.)
I'd love to discuss any of this in the comments with anyone with different experiences. Having put the game to rest, in retrospect it felt... draining, more than anything. A billion things to keep track of over tiny little fractions of percent of progress, dozens and dozens and dozens of "attack-plus-this" that don't matter, and probably the worst black magic nerf of any FF game. Pretty disappointing overall.

2023.06.04 09:44 Lovegasoline Time for a New Canister Filter ... Input Appreciated
I have a 37 gallon tank for a 6-7" shell Red Ear Slider. I've been using a Rena/Filstar - XP3/XPL canister filter for about 16-17 years (rated for approx. 100 gallons I believe). I've replaced some o-rings and gaskets and one impeller. Not long ago one of the molded-in attachment points for the motohead clamps broke so I have a bar clamp to temporarily keep the motor assembly tight to the canister to prevent leaks. Another of the four molded-in attachment points has also partially broken, but is still (just barely) usable. I'm reluctant to drop $75+/- for a replacement canister in this discontinued filter. So I'm considering a replacement.
(Yes, the tank is unfortunately a little small for him due to the apartment's space limitations).
I'm thinking it may be worthwhile to just buy a new canister filter. The XP3 has served well, can be a little noisy at times when it traps air at times (often due to low water level in the canister and/or vapor lock issues), the aforementioned broken attachment point for the clips is a design weakness, poorly implemented, and not robust or confidence inspiring. One of the inner basket handles snapped, not a functional issue. It's a pretty basic and simple in both build and quality ... I'd like to see some things made more robust ... but that's my impression from a general design vantage point a I have no experience whatsoever with any other filter.
What's considered a very good canister filter these days? Quiet is good but reliability, user friendliness, and ease of maintenance (disassembly/cleaning/etc.) are paramount. Although a filter that requires more frequent attention and routine maintenance isn't a problem for me, occasionally I need a friend to be a turtle caretaker if I'm out of town, which may require cleaning the filter, changing sponges, etc. then reassembling and getting things up and running properly with minimum fuss. A finicky, poorly designed, difficult to clean/disassemble/reassemble filter, or one that requires too tinkering will just exacerbate things.
Rock solid reliable, high built quality, easy to maintenance, and user friendly without requiring advanced mechanical aptitude to operate?
-The Fluval FX4 looks fantastic ... however the canister is way too wide for my built-in cabinet. Perhaps could build a new cabinet but it would be way wider than is optimal for my limited apartment space. So regrettably I think I'll pass in this one (unless I get a room and cabinet design epiphany).
-Fluval 407 looks interesting. Any user feedback on this? Weaknesses? Problems? Disappointments? Could Riley get a new one for $175ish (ebay) - $225.
-Eheim Classic 600 Canister Filter 2217. I'm unfamiliar,ilair but just read something on this apparently a simple very old design with no frills. Would this fit my criterion? Would a relative n00b be able to manage maintaining this if I'm away? Can be had for $125 new on Amazon.
-Eheim Pro 4+ 600? $225ish. Know nothing about it.
Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch!

2023.06.04 09:43 personman44 Unetbootin for Linux not properly creating a bootable USB, and I cannot boot with it. Possibly a permissions error?
I'm trying to do this on a Fedora 37 KDE virtual machine. This distro has SELinux implemented, though I'm not sure if it's the cause. PC is
Dell XPS 8500 from 2012, and
this is the update I'm trying to do.
I have been following
this and
this video (both doing the same exact thing pretty much) to use
UNetbootin to create a bootable USB to boot into
FreeDOS and update the BIOS of my decade old XPS 8500 PC. For PCs this old, you have to do this.
Dell and the videos show people formatting the USB to FAT32, so I did that too, and then used UNetbootin exactly like they did.
However, there's something that happens in all these videos that isn't happening for me, and it's causing the booting to fail. At
5:12 of this video and
4:00 of this video, after they use UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, the USB has a couple of files such as libcom32.c32, libutil.c32, menu.c32, syslinux.cfg, ubninit, and ubnkern. However, my USB only has ubnkern after using UNetbootin, and nothing else.
Also in the videos, when they click OK and let UNetbootin do the operation, they see a progress bar load, and then click exit on an installation complete popup. For me, I see the progress bar at 0% for a split second, and then the popup just disappears and the app closes.
I'm wondering if it's a permissions issue. It's pointed out in the first of those 2 videos at this timestamp that UNetbootin doesn't launch properly all the time, so he forces it to launch properly using sudo QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 unetbootin.
I had to use that command, because opening UNetbootin the normal way gives this popup titled "Run as root - KDE su"
```The action you requested needs root privileges.Please enter root's password below or click Ignore to continue with your current privileges"
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
Password: [Password Textbox]``
If I type the password, it gives me this error:
```Permission denied. Possibly incorrect password, please try again. On some systems, you need to be in a special group (often: wheel) to use this program
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\''' ```
If I click the ignore button, it gives this error popup titled "Error -KDE su"
```Cannot execute command 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
(Not sure if I got the apostrophes/quote symbols right. It doesn't let me copy the messages on any of these popups)
I can't try rufus instead because that's only available on Windows, and I'm on Linux. Any ideas on why this isn't working?
2023.06.04 09:42 TabControlShift23 [TOMT] [Song] [2020-2021] Song that was popular during pandemic
Popular in the US during pandemic period. It might be an english/spanish song. The music video is in a bar and the guy sings about different girls? Or dates different girls? The guy singing has highlights in his hair? At one point there is a girl dancing around him. It was a popular song and it was often played or music video was often on tv. One of the lyrics I think was something like “Girl I met down in.. “
2023.06.04 09:40 PETEthePyrotechnic How much does bar count matter when transcribing a song and taking creative liberties?
Ok so I’ll try to explain this without sounding like a sleep deprived lunatic at 1:30 am. I’m currently writing some tab for a version of a tune called valley forge so that I don’t forget my own tidbits I’ve added since I’ve last looked at the tab I learned the song from. The way the song is structured is kind of interesting- it has an A and a B part, and a third C part that is almost identical to the A part. The only relevant difference between A and C is that A has this funky little intro bar at the beginning.
Breaking up the A part into 8 bars named by their similarity would look like this-
x y y w x y y z
Whereas the B part would look like this-
y y y w y y y z
I noticed that I’ve been playing the A part like this-
x y y y w x y y y z
Instead of replacing a Y bar with the X bar, I would leave all 6 Y bars and add 2 X bars on top. Personally I don’t think it makes a noticeable difference in timing, even though all the other parts are 2 bars shorter, and I think I’ve been playing that way simply because it sounds better.
Is it just me, or is something like this noticeable? If it is, does it usually sound bad? I really don’t have anywhere else to ask this as I’m the only old time musician within a 100 miles radius.
2023.06.04 09:39 CrazyCockroachLady Excessive (American) tipping taking root in Berlin?
I'm German and lived in Berlin for almost a decade before moving to the US several years ago. I recently moved back to Germany (though a different city).
My wife and I are spening a couple of days here to enjoy the Berlin summer explore the culinary scene. While paying with card I was twice prompted (not going to name the locations, but one was a restaurant and the other a bar, both in Mitte) to tip 12% to 25%. No other option given.
I absolutely hated this excessive tipping expectation in the US (pay your employees a livable wage, for fucks sake) and I was really annoyed to find it here in Berlin, too.
(Granted, one of the two locations did seem to cater to the tourist crowd, English-only staff and all, but the other didn't).
What has been your experience on this matter?
2023.06.04 09:37 Traditional_Peak6422 Parenting advice… (Long Post)
So, my eldest son (23) has recently moved back home after living abroad for 5 years. He works in the hotel industry and while living away worked in a bar. Concerns had been raised in the past over his drinking habits but he was in another country so it was hard to actually know.
It was a difficult decision for him to move back home and he saw it as a failure (despite my reassurances about how much he has achieved etc) We live in a very rural area and he doesn’t drive so is relying on me to get him to and from work. (This is more of a mild inconvenience to me than a problem)
A few days ago he rang me earlier than expected and asked me to collect him and it became very clear that he was drunk.
Turns out he started to drink before work and decided not to stop including him drinking in his hotel. His manager had noticed something wasn’t right and sent him home.
Initially I was angry with him (I regret this in all honesty because I know he would have already felt embarrassed about it and it was also my birthday) but when I got him I asked him was he ok and what had happened and he talked a bit about how he had felt anxious about going in as he had been off sick and another manager had told him he had ruined his and his wife’s anniversary because he couldn’t get his shift covered (I was very angry at this) so this was his trigger.
He talked about how miserable he feels which I totally understand but he was very drunk so it wasn’t the right time to talk properly.
Credit to him he got up the next day and went into work to face the music (I’d have rang first because I wouldn’t have been able for that or more than likely just never went back and avoid going in the building ever again!) luckily his manager (the one who blamed him for ruining his anniversary) was very accommodating and he still has his job.
He is obviously very delicate atm so I don’t feel it’s the right time to dig deeper (only happened two days ago and “the fear” is real!) but we obviously will be sitting down to have a conversation about it this evening.
Some background;
Drink is a thing in my family. My mother was an alcoholic and died due do it when I was a child. My father also had drink problems but not the same way as my mother. As he got older and after two strokes he spent a long time drinking to excess. My brother and sister are both addicts and I myself have had issues with excessive drinking in the past so this is far from something new!
But it is my opportunity to do something none of the others have done yet. I can help him but this is where the advice is needed.
I was 18 when I had my son and he didn’t have the stability a child needs. He’s very deep and emotional and we both use meditation and spirituality to help support us BUT I am responsible for some of the things he experienced as a child and as much as I am more than willing to do the work and help him heal I know it’s going to be hard.
So what the actual f*ck am I gonna do 😂
How can I help my son?
TIA
2023.06.04 09:36 LooseComputer9015 Flask working with downloads ..
Hi all ,
Newish to working with web and flask development . I come from doing lots of GUI development, with Tkinter and others . I have some functions that generate .csv files and then place them in a folder, usually have a file dialog that request for the user to choose . Typically I’ll save these in a config.ini file for desktop apps.
How can I do something like there in flask where I have a wtform that has the user choose where to save .csv files and on submit call my function to generate csv to that said folder , or maybe the users default download folder ?
And maybe implement some sort of progress / loading bar as well freezing the page while the function is running .
Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance !
2023.06.04 09:34 Keieradouglas Conversation with a fashion designer walking from a bar to another on a summer night in Paris at canal Saint Martin :
“When you start a brand, it's like having a baby by yourself. You need to create products that you will always appreciate, not grow tired of. It's similar to having a child - it would be terrible if someone were to lose interest in their child at age five. So you must create things that can evolve and serve as extensions of yourself."
2023.06.04 09:33 Altruistic_Fly_8818 how to trust people
tonight my friend who I’ve never had trouble trusting before ended up meeting up with a girl who we were previously friends with at a bar. this girl has been VERY problematic in our friend group, knowingly dislikes me and has bpd shamed me. he had broken off being friends with her previously due to the issues she’s caused. I’m feeling very nervous and also can’t get a hold of my other friends to explain what’s going on for help. he’s the one I’ve usually gone to before when I’m struggling. I’m not entirely sure how to cope or what I can do (no matter how much therapy I do I can’t figure out how to truly trust people), so any techniques anyone knows would be fantastic. I still have the hardest time with trusting people and when situations like this happen, I’m not entirely sure how to cope with it with bpd. stuff like this makes me incredibly hyper vigilant and I’m tired of feeling this way.
2023.06.04 09:31 Professional-Ad7346 First part of a multi-part story, this is just the introduction, the terror will come later... Opinions?
As cliché as it may sound, that was a dark, cold and stormy night; In a small road cafeteria they were sheltering from the rain, drinking coffee and listening to the radio, a trucker who passed by and had stopped to drink coffee, a doctor who had done the same taking advantage of a break from his night shift at the hospital. , a surprisingly young and even attractive waitress who was counting tips while listening to the radio , a strange and diffident bespectacled guy crouching in a secluded corner , and the town sheriff sitting at a table drinking coffee , plus a young man who for the moment seemed quiet and reserved. He was wearing a red sweatshirt with a hood and pockets and sweatpants , as well as a pair of sneakers that finished off his ensemble , and sitting on a stool near the bar , he was eating a cheeseburger immersed in his own thoughts while his eyes They were oscillating between looking at the thunder through the window or looking at what the waitress was doing. She had blonde hair pulled back, was wearing a button-up green shirt that had her name written on the side, and a short black skirt. Although her work outfit was not particularly flattering, it could be seen that she had a good figure.
On the radio they advised not to go out due to the rain and they also reported a series of strange disappearances that had been taking place recently in the towns near the cafeteria. Missing animals, missing children, it didn't matter what the local authorities didn't seem to care about, at least not enough...
After counting the money and putting everything in the cash register , the girl went into the bathroom and , since her shift for that day had already finished , or rather , it should have already finished if it were not for the fact that they could not get out due to Due to the torrential rain that was falling, she decided to dress up as much as she could in front of a mirror that she had in front of her and change her work shirt for a top that she carried in her bag. Leaving the bathroom, the boy looked at her again and decided to take the opportunity to try to start a conversation: "Hey, since we're not going to be able to get out of here for at least the next few hours, would you like to chat for a while?" he said ending the sentence with a crude attempt to show his best smile.
"Of course, why not?" , the girl was friendly . The boy , beyond just being attracted to the young woman , dreamed of being a writer and had thought that at least he could come up with an idea for a character by chatting with the girl for a while . The girl approached him and sat next to him. "I've seen your name on the side of your uniform, Liv, my name is Jake"
"Nice to meet you , Jake, do you live around here?" Liv asked.
"Yeah, yeah, I guess so," Jake said, thinking about the words while scratching the side of his head - "And you?"
"Yeah …"
Jake noticed that Liv was wearing three bracelets on one arm: one in a pastel tone that read QHMM (which could perfectly mean "What Would Midge Maisel Do"), another that read "NORMAL PEOPLE SCARE ME" ( one of Tate Langdon's signature phrases from the American Horror Story series, and a rose that seemed to have a spider web pattern, which immediately reminded him of the Spider-Gwen character.
Have you seen the new Spider-Man movie? Jake asked, looking closely at the girl's bracelet.
“Yeah, yeah,” Liv said, noticing Jake looking at her bracelets.
"And did you like me?"
"Are you kidding, man? That movie is a fucking masterpiece."
At that moment, it seemed to Jake that the sky opened before his eyes, giving way to a beautiful sunset. At least in his head, it was still raining heavily outside. So with the gates of Olympus opening before him, metaphorically speaking, he gained a bit of self-confidence and started talking to Liv without worries as if he had known her forever...
They were talking quietly when suddenly and with a kind of noise, a middle-aged man who was a local guy entered the cafeteria. His clothing consisted of jeans, a faded leather hooded sweatshirt, and cowboy boots with worn soles. In addition , on the sweatshirt , he wore some pins , among them the most notable ones were one with a smiley face and a bullet hole in the head , one with a peace symbol and one with the letters CK . The strange man sat down at a table and asked for a coffee, to which the girl said that, since her work day was technically over, she could pour herself the coffee from the coffee maker and leave the money on the table. The guy got up, went to the bar and put a crumpled bill and a couple of coins there, then he took the jug from the coffee maker and a cup and poured himself some coffee. He took a small sip and looked suspiciously at the two youngs who had been talking until then.
2023.06.04 09:26 EatMySoba I (m30) am worried I'm being used or played by my friend(f27)
I've started hanging out with a friend more lately who happens to be a woman. We both recently just got out of relationships, mine was only 5 months, but hers was 5 years(our break ups were 2 weeks apart). She is pretty jaded about dating again and I'm also not really looking for another right now(I do miss having someone tho). We were always friends before covid, but towards the end we started talking and hanging out more. After our break ups we would hang out like every other day and would go to bars to drink and talk about life and video games. Some how we got onto friends with benefits, which is something I very much stay away from. I knew she had 2 guy friends like that, and it never bothered me, cause we are just friends. She asked me how I felt about fwb, I told her I don't do that cause I ALWAYS catch feelings and don't want to be heart broken. So a week goes by and I ask her if she wants to hangout. We go to a bar, I guess one of her fwb bailed last minute, and I just felt like drinking and having fun(they had a game night). While we were drinking she brought up the friends with benefits again with me, and I reiterated how I will ALWAYS catch feeling and want to stay away from that(I catch them fast too 😮💨). We don't talk about it anymore, but then make plans to come back in 2 days for a dnd night they have. We play video games online with each other like everyday, so we are always kinda hanging out everyday. So the dnd day comes up and we have fun at the bar, but then she starts to touch my leg a bit and I kinda just write it off as just being drunk and over thinking it. So I get way too drunk and have to crash at her place(I would uber, but my car is at her place and it cost way too much to get home). I start to sleep on the floor, but she tells me to sleep in the bed. I think about it for a bit and was gonna just tell her the floor is fine, but before I say anything she says it's fine and it doesn't mean anything. So being drunk and dumb I sleep in the bed without another thought about it. She tells me she want to cuddle and that it doesn't mean anything, so like an idiot I flop over into a cuddle position and we pass out(nothing else happens after that and I go home after giving her a hug good bye the next morning). I go to her bday party and she comes over after she cancels going out to a club. We watch some shows in my room and then cuddle a bit. I send her off to the spare bedroom at my place after a few more hours of shows and cuddling. I sleep in my bed and she sleeps in the other room. She goes home the next morning after we get some breakfast and talk about life and dumb game shit(overwatch 2). Let's skip to like 20 days later, when we are going to the ren faire together. It's me her and her best friend(my other friends bailed on me last minute). We all have fun and her friend says she has to go, so we see her off. We are pretty drunk at this point and we start taking pictures together. She catches me off guard and kisses me in one of the photos. We start taking couples photos after that and I'm picking her up and playing along now(im a dumbass). We stroll around the faire a bit longer and then decided to head home now that I'm sober enough to drive. We head back to my place and drink and play some video games. After a few hours we move onto Netflix and we cuddle again. She is too drunk to drive home now, so she sleeps over and invites me to sleep in the same bed as her(she says she is just like sleeping next to someone). I join her, but the she starts cuddling with me more and I get turned on(it's very noticeable I'm just in undies). I apologize to her and she shows me that she is also turned on, and being a bit high from weed and drunk I start playing with her(she seems to be enjoying it and I love that). She stops me from continuing with my hands and then I take as a sign to back off. The we wake up next day get breakfast and then she goes home. Like a week and a half goes by and we go hiking by my place, it was a lot of fun, we decided to go back to my place and smoke and game. It gets late really fast and so I offer the spare bed. She tells me to come sleep with her and I join her. We cuddle more and I obviously get turned on again and she plays with it a bit. After a few minutes of that I work up the courage to ask her if she wanted to do more, because of last time(not sure if yall could tell, but I already caught feelings after the kiss). She makes fun of me for not doing more last time, and then we do it after a bit of laughing. Next day the we hang out together the whole day and go drinking with my friends, but I hold off as I'm driving. We go back to my place and the same thing as the night before happens(smoke and sex). The next day we get lunch and she really opens up to me about her and her family and I listen and to my best to be there for her. She tells me she loves me as a friend and I also feel similar to that, but instead of saying anything I just give her a hug. The next week I go over to her place to play games, smoke weed, and chat. I tell her that I want to date her and my feelings that have developed. She tells me that she doesn't want to jump back into a relationship so soon. I understand that and tell her that I would wait for her if she ever wants to be with me that way(I'm dumb). We cuddle and I pass out. I go home the next day not feeling so great, but happy I got my feelings out to her. Let's say like 3 days go by and we don't really talk all that much other than sending memes back and forth. One night I ask her if she wants to hang out and grab some food. She agrees, but wants to be brought home cause she misses her place. So we go for a walk and then drive in my car. We stop to talk and cuddle for a bit in my car. We talk and she wants me to know that she wouldn't do things with me if she didn't have some feelings for me, but tells me that she doesn't want a relationship and doesn't want to lose the friendship. We cuddle a bit more and then I drive her home. For the past few times we have hung out we don't really do anything but kissing a bit. I went on what I thought was a very date like thing(we went on a picnic in a nice arboretum). We kissed a few times and then she said she doesn't want to kiss anymore, so we stopped and just talked and then walked around. I brought her home cause she works early in the morning and doesn't want to stay up all night with me(seems fair).
I'm sure there are things I forgot. I would like a woman's opinion on this and I don't know what to do. I know I'm willing to wait for her to like me back, but I also don't want to be heart broken. What do I do? I'm so hopelessly lost in all of this. She still does stuff with her fwb and I fell left feeling stupid and used.
You can ask anything and be as harsh as you want. Also I apologize for my bad grammar and maybe missing words.
2023.06.04 09:25 SWMobileStorage SHIPPING CONTAINER TERMS TO KNOW
Shipping containers have become common in our modern world, from construction sites and ports to portable offices, modular buildings and more. However, for those unfamiliar, shipping container terminology and jargon can be confusing and overwhelming. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the shipping container terminology you need to know to understand the language of shipping containers.
13 SHIPPING CONTAINER TERMS TO KNOW
Whether you’re a business owner looking to ship your products overseas or simply curious about how these massive steel boxes work, we’ve got you covered. This guide will give you the knowledge you need to navigate the world of shipping container terminology.
The standard shipping container is 8’ 6” tall, and the most common container sizes are 20 and 40 feet long. They’re created out of Corten steel, a type of weathering steel resistant to weather effects. Typical containers have double cargo doors on one end and an end frame on the other.
1. DOOR HEADER
A door header is an integral part of the container’s structure. It’s a horizontal beam that runs along the top of the cargo doors, adding support for the roof, distributing storage weight and strengthening the security of the doors to the container. For modified containers that add roll-up doors, the plate protects the roll-up door barrel.
2. DOOR GASKET
Seals called
gaskets are installed around the cargo doors to prevent moisture, dust, and other contaminants from entering the container’s storage space. These gaskets are lodged in channels and grooves around the perimeter of the door frame. They’re also a crucial part of the container’s wind and weather-tight qualities.
3. LOCK BOX
Here at Southwest Mobile Storage, we use a three-tiered system to make sure our containers offer vault-level security. Lock boxes are a critical security feature we install on shipping containers that prevent unauthorized access to stored materials.
When a padlock is enclosed in a steel lock box, it becomes much more difficult to successfully gain access inside a container. Moreover, potential thieves must use cutting or drilling, deterring criminals that don’t have the time or energy to deal with the challenge.
4. SLIDE BOLT
The second part of our container security system is our slide bolt. When closed, a heavy-duty puck lock can be attached to the circular spot inside the slid bolt frame, creating another layer of security to deter break-ins.
5. DOOR LOCKING HANDLE
Our container security system’s third step is the door-locking handle. The handles aid in opening and closing the doors and have the capability to lock in their final resting place, situated beneath the container locking tabs. The locking tabs are lockable with padlocks, thus providing a final seal for container security.
6. DOOR PANEL
The door panel of a container allows access to the inside of your container and holds the other components attached to the door, like locking bars. Each door is made of thick steel and can swing 270 degrees outward.
7. LOCKING BARS
The locking bars span the width of the container’s door opening and attach to the end frame on each side of the door. Handles located on the exterior of the container typically operate the locking bars, which rods or cables connect to.
The door-locking handles secure the locking bars in place, holding the doors securely closed and preventing them from opening during transportation. Two locking bars are standard in 20-foot containers, while larger 40-foot containers may have four or more.
8. FORKLIFT POCKETS
One of the biggest benefits of using a container for storage is that you can easily transport it. Containers can be
transported by forklifts using the two pockets on the bottom sides of the container. From here, they can be transported on-site or onto a truck bed for delivery to a location farther away.
9. CORNER CASTING
Corner castings serve an essential role in maintaining your container’s structure. These eight 3.0mm thick corner castings have some of the thickest steel on the container, allowing containers to be stacked and handled securely. You can stack a maximum of nine containers, but this limit may be lower depending on local conditions.
10. TOP SIDE RAIL
The top side rail of a container helps provide structure to the roof. That helps distribute weight evenly across the top of the container. It also ensures a level surface that prevents stacked containers from shifting during transportation.
11. SIDE PANEL
The corner posts, top rails, and bottom rails work together with container side panels to create a rigid frame that distributes weight. Corrugated side panels, which have distinctive ridges and grooves add strength and flexibility. These panels enclose the storage area and prevent stored materials from moving around when properly stored.
12. END FRAME
A container end frame is a structural component of a shipping container located at the end of the container. Thus, the rectangular frame made of steel provides stability to the back of the container.
13. BOTTOM RAILS
The bottom side rail performs a crucial function in holding up the rest of the container, acting as the primary load-bearing component of the container. It connects to the bottom corner castings to lock on to containers beneath.
SUMMARY
After this list, you should better understand shipping container terminology and how the different parts of a container work together to provide you with secure storage space. Moreover, knowing what container parts do can give you the confidence to undertake
repair projects or inspire you to
modify a container for a specific use.
2023.06.04 09:21 personman44 Unetbootin for Linux not properly creating a bootable USB, and I cannot boot with it. Possibly a permissions error?
I'm trying to do this on a Fedora 37 KDE virtual machine. This distro has SELinux implemented, though I'm not sure if it's the cause. PC is
Dell XPS 8500 from 2012, and
this is the update I'm trying to do.
I have been following
this and
this video (both doing the same exact thing pretty much) to use
UNetbootin to create a bootable USB to boot into
FreeDOS and update the BIOS of my decade old XPS 8500 PC. For PCs this old, you have to do this.
Dell and the videos show people formatting the USB to FAT32, so I did that too, and then used UNetbootin exactly like they did.
However, there's something that happens in all these videos that isn't happening for me, and it's causing the booting to fail. At
5:12 of this video and
4:00 of this video, after they use UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, the USB has a couple of files such as libcom32.c32, libutil.c32, menu.c32, syslinux.cfg, ubninit, and ubnkern. However, my USB only has ubnkern after using UNetbootin, and nothing else.
Also in the videos, when they click OK and let UNetbootin do the operation, they see a progress bar load, and then click exit on an installation complete popup. For me, I see the progress bar at 0% for a split second, and then the popup just disappears and the app closes.
I'm wondering if it's a permissions issue. It's pointed out in the first of those 2 videos at this timestamp that UNetbootin doesn't launch properly all the time, so he forces it to launch properly using sudo QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 unetbootin.
I had to use that command, because opening UNetbootin the normal way gives this popup titled "Run as root - KDE su"
```The action you requested needs root privileges.Please enter root's password below or click Ignore to continue with your current privileges"
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
Password: [Password Textbox]``
If I type the password, it gives me this error:
```Permission denied. Possibly incorrect password, please try again. On some systems, you need to be in a special group (often: wheel) to use this program
Command: 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\''' ```
If I click the ignore button, it gives this error popup titled "Error -KDE su"
```Cannot execute command 'bash -c '\"QT_X11_NO_MITSHM=1 /usbin/unetbootin "rootcheck=no'''\'''
(Not sure if I got the apostrophes/quote symbols right. It doesn't let me copy the messages on any of these popups)
I can't try rufus instead because that's only available on Windows, and I'm on Linux. Any ideas on why this isn't working?

2023.06.04 09:20 Calixtinus I stayed home instead of going to the bar across the street.
Usually, I'd be across the street at the bar. Finishing off the night to quiet those voices we all know too well of how and why we aren't enough. I would go next door and quietly wonder if there was a girl to keep me company tonight. Desperately. I spent the last 30 minutes loving my dogs listening to a song played recently on Ted Lasso, "Fought & Lost" by Sam Ryder ft. Brian May. I've cried more in the past week than I have in the past year. I'm still trying to hide it, and I'm not necessarily embarrassed of it. I'm just feeling it more. I know the next few drinks will only make me feel worse in the morning and stop me from stretching for the potential of the next day. I've loved y'all for years. Thanks for reading.
