I write book reviews on Half Past Midnight, a blog dedicated to the surreal world of fantasy and science fiction. A few days ago, I posted reviews for the first two books in this series. While this review does not have spoilers about book 3, it does have spoilers for books 1 and 2.
Welcome to my humble appreciation post for the third book in the A Chorus of Dragons series. Or better yet - call it the rollercoaster which never ends.

Plot

The Name of All Things ended on a bitter note with the destruction of Atrine after Morios completely wrecked the city. Vol Karoth, previously imprisoned for thousands of years, is now finally awake. Relos Var won (once again). Things tend to go your way when you've planned each of your steps centuries ahead of your enemies.
Although not fully free of his bonds, Vol Karoth has now woken up from his deep slumber. That is pretty terrifying. Knowing that some part of Kihrin's soul is somehow connected to this dark, endless entity is also terrifying.

No one could truly see Vol Karoth. He formed a man-size hole cut from reality, a silhouette of absolute, perfect blackness. His appearance offered up the final, absolute proof of my worst nightmares: Vol Karoth was free.

The only thing that can possibly stop the utter annihilation of the world is the ancient Ritual of Night. Meant to be enacted by the leader of an immortal race, this ritual could give the Eight more time to figure out how to deal with the impending destruction of the world. As it turns out, it can only be performed once by each race, and at a terrible cost. Since its creation, The Ritual of Night has already been enacted by three of the four immortal races - the voras, voramer, and vordreth - leaving only the vané. They have just one shot to do it, and to do it right.
Kihrin, Janel, Teraeth, and Thurvishar start this book with a single objective - to convince the vané king, Kelanis, to perform The Ritual of Night. And as usual, nothing goes according to the plan. Why am I not surprised?
Traveling to Manol makes for quite a change from the usual locales we are accustomed to, and boy - is it fun. A lot of old characters finally come back - I was glad to see a lot of the first book's cast return. Therin, Khaeriel, and Terindel (Doc) show up amid a lot of family drama, which is one of the best parts of the book. It was great to see a lot more quieter moments this time, since we don't usually see the more intimate side of the characters while they are dealing with whatever nightmares haunt them. Nonetheless, those scenes, although intimate in scale, often add a lot of depth since they reveal what really drives the characters on a personal level.
What it results in is a story chock full of morally grey characters switching sides, refreshing worldbuilding, little side quests, and lots of vané politics. I loved all chapters equally. Although Xivan and Talea are a little boring to me as characters, having Senera and Suless around ensures there's never a dull moment.
I really enjoyed how Lyons handled the past lives of Janel, Kihrin, and Teraeth. Each of them has reincarnated over the centuries as notable people in history. While Teraeth remembers those lives in clear detail, the other two don't. Very aptly named, this book spent a lot of time exploring what happened in those previous lives, and I loved it. So many more things start to make sense about Elana, S'arric, and the dark connection between Kihrin and Vol Karoth.

The memories are too much, so overflowing I feel like a cup trying to hold the ocean. I can only gulp mouthfuls, knowing it would take me centuries to swallow the sea. I am drunk on memory, drowned in my identities. It hasn’t just been one or two. I’ve lived a dozen lives. But that first one lasted ten times longer than all the rest combined.

At last, The Memory of Souls gave me something I'd been waiting for. Just Kihrin, Janel, Teraeth, and Thurvishar hanging out together, fighting demons and bantering. Part of the reason why this book works so well is that the narration is nowhere near as convoluted as before, and all our favorite characters finally are TOGETHER. Give me a great cast, and I'll go anywhere with them.
The ending of this book had some events that felt a lot more permanent than the previous ones. The course of our characters is now set in stone. There was a tipping point, and now there is no turning back on the consequences.

Characters

I found it weird that almost none of the side characters from The Name of All Things made it to this book, and I’m a little annoyed at that. Why make a whole book about them?
Nonetheless, there are a lot of complex, interpersonal relationships uncovered between the characters - both old and new. I love that no matter how big the threat facing them is, everyone still has their personal problems with family members, both close and estranged. The Memory of Souls exposed the darker side of a lot of different people. How far would you go to achieve your goals and who are you willing to sacrifice for it?

Kihrin

As always, Kihrin brings with him a chaotic, confused energy that so helpfully lends itself to this glorious mess of a book. Despite everything he's seen and everything he's undergone - Kihrin still marches on, determined to save the people he cares for. Although marked by prophecy, he still takes the agency to make his own choices, no matter how painful a path they might lead him to. Between his feelings for Teraeth and Janel and Vol Karoth's hold on him, the poor guy goes through a lot.

“You’re terrible,” Janel murmured. “I’m honest,” I whispered into her ear. “And you are music and songs and the light of a thousand stars. You are storm clouds and velvet skies and brilliant columns of fire. How can I not be drawn to you?”

Teraeth

Teraeth finally gets a POV and some excellent character development. Although we only saw him as Kihrin's best friend in The Ruin of Kings, this book explores the deeper scars left on him by his past lives and the messed up dynamics between him, his mother, Khaemezra (Thaena), and his father, Terindel the Black. Thaena has her claws in him deep. This time around, we see a lot more flaws in her real nature as a manipulator who moves people around to do her dirty work, as well the effect it has on the said people - including her own son.

Janel

Janel, surprisingly, is almost relegated to a side character. There are chapters where she does nothing more than serve as a point of conflict between Kihrin and Teraeth. I found this really upsetting since The Name of All Things focused sorely on her as a character and made me love her as much as Kihrin. But this time, Lyons sees her more as a plot device to unlock Elana's memory and not as a person, as Janel Therannon, in her own right. Although she still has her conflicts with Suless and Xaltorath, I wish she felt more involved in the plot.

Relos Var and Senera

Relos Var is an accurate reflection of what happens when you believe in your cause so strongly that you cannot see anything past it. Senera, blinded by her faith in him, still can't quite realize that she is nothing more than a tool in his hands. Although I found her a little annoying last book, she seems to have matured this time, bringing a sort of quiet tiredness to the table with her valuable magic skills. I don't know if I could call them both villains, though. This book makes it clear that there is no black and white, no good and bad - everyone's morality is in those varying shades of grey.

Worldbuilding

History-wise, this novel sheds more light on the origins of the Eight, the dragons, and the Ritual of Night, as well as Vol Karoth's creation. I'd been looking forward to these bits for a while, and you finally get more answers. I love how the series always goes a step back into the history of the world with every book. It's a bit like peeling the layers of an onion - every part pulls back the curtain on yet another aspect of history.

Writing Style

This book still follows the jumpy narrative style of its predecessors but with a lot more POVs. Mercifully, the time gaps are not too huge and the chapters are chronological (for the most part). The different points of view and timelines are aligned in a way that the reveals make the most sense - the timelines in the past always coincide with a relevant chapter in the present. This would have taken a sheer amount of effort to get right, but it shines.
The story takes us from the dry, void reaches of the Korathean Blight to the exotic, lush jungle of the vané. Overall, the writing just seemed leveled up this time. I'm not sure why, but the prose and the choice of words seemed a whole lot better. The great dialogue and witty banter are always a plus.

In Conclusion

The Memory of Souls is a gift that keeps on giving. This might be my favorite book of the series and the year. This was the book that made trudging through The Name of All Things absolutely worth it. Despite some minor misgivings, this is the strongest installment yet in a series that rewards its readers with great characters, rich world-building, and twists that subvert expectations. Onward and upward to the next one!

I'm sorry in advance for the long post - I'll put a TL;DR at the end. It's years of built up frustrations and sadness that I just need to get out. I had my son, we'll call him Ty, at a yound age (19), and raised him as a single mom up until he was 16, when my now husband and I started living together. His dad and I were never seriously together. Ty's now 22 and won't speak to me anymore, and my heart breaks daily.
Ty was diagnosed with a high-functioning form of autism at 4 years old. From that point on, I brought him to occupational therapy every week that I was allowed (more on that in a bit) until he was 12 and graduated out of it. I went to his IEP at school every year from kindergarten through senior year of high school. I met and talked with his teachers and resource room leads consistently throughout the school years. I took him to play therapies to help him learn to socialize. I took him to regular couselining appointments. I picked him up from school on days when he'd have meltdowns. I say none of this to brag about my parenting - I was very far from perfect in many ways. But in all of this, his dad, we'll call him Richard, was doing nothing but putting road blocks up for me to get around.
Richard went to zero of Ty's IEPs. He went to 1 parent teacher conference in elementary school in which he told the teachers that they didn't know what they were doing, that Ty didn't need any extra help in school, and that Ty was not on the spectrum. He cancelled all of Ty's OT appointments. I had to pay thousands of dollars in court and attorney fees just to be able to get Ty back into his therapies from school and outside resources in order to ensure that he could succeed as his best self in a neurotypical world. I was far from wealthy, but I was very lucky to have an attorney who really fought hard for Ty while working with me to not put me into bankruptcy fighting this. Richard lied to the courts consistently in order to not have to pay me child support, even though he only paid me, at the highest, $300 a month. I never went after him to help me pay for the therapies (as he was court ordered to pay half of) because, with everyting else I was fighting for, it was a fight I just didn't have the energy for.
Ty still went to see his dad every other weekend. He hated it there. When Ty was a little older, Richard would literally save up housework for Ty to do when he was there on his weekends. A sink overflowing with dirty dishes for Ty to do, an overgrown lawn for Ty to mow, a messy room he shared with his brother who was 9 years younger than him that he'd have to clean. Babysitting said brother while Richard went out with his wife. One day, when Richard decided that he didn't want to pick up Ty from my house, he told Ty that he needed to walk to where Richard was coaching his other son in soccer (about 5 miles away). Ty was 16 and didn't have a license yet. I was at work and was not about to leave just because Richard was having a temper tantrum about picking up his son. Ty never went to see his dad after that, until about a year ago.
Ty started dating a girl about 2 years ago. I was so excited for him! Until about a year into that relationship. His girlfriend decided that, since Ty was on the spectrum, he needed help with absolutely everything. I had worked for YEARS to make sure that Ty could do everything independently. He was able to keep a schedule, work a regular part time job and supplement that with driving for DoorDash. We went over finances, how much it would cost to live on his own (his goal in the next few years). He worked his ass off, and he loved his job! He was able to get enough hours to quit DoorDash. He was named Employee of the Month after being at his job for only a couple of months. I was so proud of him and everything he was accomplishing!
Then his girlfriend got it into his head that the people at his job were bullying him and making him work too hard. None of this had ever been an issue before as he had loved what he was doing. Then she started telling him that because of his autism, he needed help in everything that he did. He was all of a sudden unable to clean his room on his own. He was unable to clean his car on his own. He was unable to look for a new job on his own. He was unable to get an oil change for his car on his own. When I challenged her on this, she said that I just didn't understand how his brain worked. I continued to try to push him to be his best, but he kept drifting further and further away. Then he started seeing his dad again.
When Ty complained to Richard about me, Richard told Ty how difficult I had made his (Richard's) life all those years. He told Ty that all I wanted was his money. He told Ty that I tried to keep him from his dad. In all of those years of Richard giving me hell, I never took that to Ty. I never told Ty what a POS his dad was. I just waited for him to figure it out. And he did. But now his girlfriend and his dad are putting it in his head what a terrible person I have been to him.
Ty moved out of my house last fall. He will not speak to me anymore. He has said that he was going to block my phone number. I don't know if he has or not, but I will still text him periodically to let him know that I still love him. But I don't hear back. I don't know if I ever will. He's now surrounded by people that put it in his head how terrible I am. I don't know how to come back from that. I don't know how to reach him anymore. I refuse to sink to the level of talking shit to him about the people he's surrounding himself with now. The only thing that I WILL continue to put into his head (if he'll speak to me again), is that what they are saying is wrong. That he is capable of so much more than what they are giving him credit for. My biggest hope is that he will eventually start up a relationship again with my parents (they were always very close) who can make sure to continue to put into his head how much I love him.
TL;DR - After raising my son alone for his whole life without help from his father, he has reconnected with his dad and believes the lies being told to him by his father about how terrible of a person I was and am. He has now moved out of my house and will no longer talk to me.

Once upon a time, in a small town named Absurdia, there lived a potato farmer named Harold. Harold was an ordinary man with an extraordinary love for potatoes. He had a potato-shaped birthmark on his forehead, which he believed was a sign of his potato destiny.

Just when Harold thought all hope was lost, a flying unicorn descended from the sky. The unicorn, named Sparkles, had a rainbow-colored mane and an insatiable appetite for french fries. Sparkles used her magical horn to rescue Harold from the mashed potato pit and returned his human form.
Grateful for his salvation, Harold decided to become a potato activist, advocating for the rights of potatoes everywhere. He traveled the world, giving impassioned speeches about the plight of potatoes and their need for freedom.
But as time went on, Harold's activism became more absurd. He started organizing protests in which people dressed up as potatoes and chanted nonsensical slogans. The townsfolk thought he had lost his mind and began avoiding him.
One fateful day, as Harold was delivering a passionate speech about the importance of potato equality, a giant carrot emerged from the ground. The carrot, named Sir Crunchy, was the leader of the vegetable rebellion and had come to challenge Harold's potato-centric ideology.
A fierce battle ensued between Harold and Sir Crunchy, with potato cannons and carrot spears flying through the air. The townspeople watched in disbelief as vegetables waged war against each other.
Suddenly, a giant tomato named Count Salsa appeared, commanding an army of dancing onions. The tomato declared that it was time for all vegetables to unite against the tyranny of humans. And so, the story of Harold, the potato farmer turned activist, faded into the annals of absurdity, leaving the townsfolk scratching their heads and wondering how they had gotten caught up in such a bizarre tale. But in the world of Absurdia, where potatoes whisper and vegetables wage war, sense and reason were mere potatoes in a salad of madness.

I think they are almost the same thing as the Kazenbo, but they are the actual thing, while Kazenbo was a representation of Kanjuro own soul mixed with hate and materialized by the power of Fude Fude no Mi.
What I believe to be Kanjuro soul representation
Very similar to Imu and Gorosei, and looks a lot like a distorted version of Kanjuro representation in the flashback.

The Immortality Surgery

• Kazenbo/Kanjuro
• Brook keeping his personality while in 'soul mode'

l believe the immortality surgery isn't something you do on the user's body to keep it alive, but on its souls. It tranfers the mind to the soul.
When Law change people personalitys, he is actually changing their souls. Why I believe that? Because:

• When in "Soul Mode" Brook is still himself.
• The 'homies' gain personalities just by receiving a soul.

The Yomi Yomi no Mi is similar what I think the immortality surgery does, but without being attached to the body.

Devil Fruits

Assuming we are on the right track, what about Devil Fruits? Well... the important things we know about them is:

• They can affect traits/characteristics/parts of a person, like body, age, soul, shadow, etc.
• They reincarnate in fruits.
• They can be assimilated by cannibalism.
• They can be assimilated by an unknow method, used by Blackbeard.
• They can be replicated.
• They can be created from animals DNA.

What we don't know:

• Why there's only one type of each.
• If artifical one reincarnate.

Lets focus on the Devil part and their reincarnation, because I have no clue why there's only one of each, at least the natural ones. For me it doesn't make sense them being unique if they can be created.
Anyway, based on the previous information, I think Devil Fruits are created by using someone's soul. Not in a cute way, but actually stopping them to ever be reborn in a normal way or "going to heaven", so that's might be what caused the void century war.
How? While Great Kingdom focused on developing humane tech, like devices to create food, to change clothes, and other things, WG took the 'easy' path and started to use souls to increase its power, be it themselves or using the Ancient Kingdom version of "MADS", similar to how CC work for Vegapunk but started to do his own inhumane stuff.
So the war might not be just 'AK vs 20 Kingdoms', but more like a civil war, with the 'baddies' winning with the help of the 20 kingdoms. While AK had to use weapons with 'DF powers', the enemy became the power themselves.

Devil Fruits Reincarnation

I really don't think fruits can manipulate destiny or move on their own, so their way to 'evade' WG, as theorized by the Gorosei, is to reincarnate somewhere harder for them to acquire it, which might explain why they don't simply gather all fruits from the world. That or some fruits were created using volunteers and go to the WG on purpose.
Shandora guiding people to trees is important because they were allied with the Ancient Kingdom, so this might be a way to protect the souls from being used by the enemies.
The will of the fruit might also depend on their original form, so Human's Will > Dog's Will, which might influence on how long they can wander until entering a new host or how smart they are.
I believe they reincarnate in fruits because that's the most logical way to be reborn: by being consumed, assuming they can't just enter a person/animal because they already have a soul 'protecting' them. They act like a parasite, be it on purpose or not.
They may be able to go to a rock instead of a fruit, but no one is eating that and if no one destroys it, they would basically be trapped there forever. Fruits go bad, so if no one found them, they can just reincarnate in another one when it expires.
Eating is just a way to destroy the container, be it a fruit or a human (rip Mother Caramel). Basically, if someone fed a DF to a diamond, it will take A LONG TIME for them to be reincarnated.
Based on that, what I think Blackbeard does is basically stopping the soul from ever leaving the area around the host, that's why he needs the blanket, and uses Yami Yami no Mi to absorb it against the 'devil' will. Why he can absorb it is topic for another theory.
