2023.06.04 19:56 FreddyTeddy5 American Feds may have framed a Charlestown, MA robbery crew for killing two armored car guards in Hudson, NH in August 1994, when in reality it was the work of a South Boston crew under Whitey Bulger's command. Feds framed Charlestown gang due to their alliance with Bulger, who was an informant

So Anthony Shea, one of the members of the Charlestown robbery crew, got his sentence for murdering two armored car guards in Hudson, NH in August 1994 reduced from a life sentence to a 35 year sentence- https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/06/02/metro/i-have-lot-regrets-charlestown-bank-robber-says-1990s-carjacking-slaying-two-security-guards/
But, a convicted domestic terrorist named Clayton Waagner, who I believe is in federal prison with one of the members of Shea's crew named Stephen Burke, wrote a short story in which he claims that it was not a Charlestown, MA crew that was responsible for the 1994 killings, but rather a South Boston crew under the command of Boston Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger. In the book, Waagner claims that the FBI framed the robbery and murder on the Charlestown crew to cover up their support of and involvement with Whitey Bulger, who was one of the FBI's top informants at the time. It's also important to note that the Hudson robbery and murders happened in August 1994, and Bulger fled Boston in December 1994.
A lot of Waagner's story checks out.
For example, after Bulger was caught in 2011, the Charlestown Patch did a piece on him, and it talked about how Bulger wasn't well regarded in Charlestown and how Whitey Bulger feared the gangsters in Charlestown (link). So, the ideas from Waagner's short story that Stephen Burke and Whitey Bulger didn't like each other due to Bulger extorting Murray, and that Bulger had feared Charlestown criminals, all checks out.
Also, a 2013 Boston.com article claimed that Whitey Bulger did extort American IRA commander Joseph Murray, which also confirms a detail in Waagner's story- https://www.boston.com/uncategorized/noprimarytagmatch/2013/01/07/convicted-marijuana-dealer-loses-appeal-claimed-fbi-lied-in-his-1980s-case-to-protect-whitey-bulge#:~:text=NoPrimaryTagMatch-,Convicted%20marijuana%20dealer%20loses%20appeal%3B%20claimed%20FBI%20lied%20in%20his,case%20to%20protect%20Whitey%20Bulger.&text=A%20federal%20appeals%20court%20has,James%20%E2%80%9CWhitey'
In addition, the reason Stephen Burke got sentenced to life was because his brother John Burke ratted him out, but his brother admitted to killing someone in Charlestown in 1980, and the Feds said they would give him immunity from prosecution if he testified against Stephen by saying Stephen told him it was his and Shea's crew that killed the Hudson guards (link).
At Stephen Burke's sentencing hearing "Stephen Burke accused the FBI and prosecutors of giving money, drugs and other incentives to witnesses.. ``We never had a chance in this trial. We were railroaded. This trial was a charade, a farce, a New Hampshire-style lynching" (link).
There is certainly some truth to what Stephen Burke is saying. John Burke admitted to smoking cocaine for 20 years at Stephen Burke's trial (link). Also, according to the Seattle times, in a separate trial regarding a separate violent Charlestown drug ring, "Authorities managed to crack the Code of Silence after a three-year investigation in which the government spent more than $1 million to protect witnesses, including a half-dozen townies who asked to be moved out of the neighborhood for fear of retribution. About a dozen thieves and drug dealers were granted immunity from prosecution and received new identities under the federal Witness Protection Program" (link). So, due to this, I think it is very possible the Feds bribed Charlestown people with drugs and money to lie about Stephen Burke, Shea, and their crew.
Another fascinating detail was Kelly Ayotte, who served as New Hampshire's attorney general from 2004-09 and then as one of New Hampshire's senators from 2011-17 was Stephen Burke's defense attorney in 1994 (link). In Waagner's book, he talks about for awhile that Ayotte suspected the FBI of foul play, but the FBI was able to hide some important evidence. Interestingly, Ayotte has been radio silent about her being Burke's defense attorney since Burke was convicted. You have to wonder if she was threatened, like did they tell her we know you have political ambitions, and we will squash them if you look into this any further.
There is a lot more research for me to do on this case. I am just scratching the surface. I will periodically update this post with more details. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

2023.06.04 19:48 TensorDudee Am I going in the right direction to crack Data science positions @FAANG?

I am 23M and have done my engineering in ECE from a tier-3 college in West Bengal. As of now, I work as a data scientist in Kolkata, I have around 2.5 YOE and getting paid around 13LPA. But I want to be the best in what I do and crack data scientist positions at FAANG companies. To proceed with this goal below are the thing I am working on,
  1. Probability and statistics: I am following stat-110 from Harvard and Joseph K. Blitzstein's Introduction to Probability book. I find this course a bit difficult but practical. As both the book and lecture are from the same person so they align together and I am being able to grasp the concepts. But the exercise from this book is a bit hard, so I struggle but eventually, everything makes sense. As of now, I can solve easy(sometimes medium too!) probability questions from FAANG interviews.
  2. Machine Learning questions: I am not much scared of this portion as I can comfortably answer most of the easy and medium questions, sometimes I struggle with hard questions but I think a little bit more self-play and I will be good to go! I try to understand every algorithm from a mathematical POV, let's say there is a new concept of the transformer (which is the major part of chatGPT), so here to learn the concept I first read the paper, and then try to implement it from scratch. I try to dig deep and try to understand what is happening under the hood, sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail, but eventually I try to learn. I love Machine learning and learning is fun here! The same goes for Algorithms such as Logistic regression, GBDT etc. Credit: I find ML easy just because of one organization, the applied ai course. The instructor is the best.
  3. Data structures and Algorithms: I am learning from an algo-expert, I also know the basics of DSA but am not an expert. I am trying to level up my skills here, I got to know that solving medium leet-code questions will be more than enough to crack data science at FAANG. Is it true?
Now I have a few questions, am I going in the right direction? Am I missing anything?

2023.06.04 18:35 zebrawithflowers History question: Sites mentioned in book "The Ruin of All Witches"

Hi all!
I've been reading The Ruin of All Witches by Malcolm Gaskill which examines the witchcraft accusations of Mary and Hugh Parsons that took place in the 1640s-1650s in Springfield. Fascinating book, and since I don't live far from Springfield, I figured I might explore some of the area when I am nearby.
Here's where I'm running into trouble: he mentions a street that doesn't seem to exist. "I continued along Main, through the traditionally Italian south end, past a statue of Christopher Columbus, as far as Elmwood Street. I was back at the site of the Parsons homestead..." Google Maps doesn't list an Elmwood Street in Springfield, although it does list an Elmwood Avenue in West Springfield. There's a West Elmwood Street in Springfield, but it is on the other side of 91 and doesn't intersect with Main.
Then he discusses walking down Pine and seeing an exposed portion of the Mill River. "At the junction of Main Street stood a boulder set with a plaque commemorating the deaths of Thomas Cooper and Thomas Miller, who near that place on October 5, 1675, became the first casualties of the attack in Metacom's War, which remains, proportionally, America's bloodiest yet least remembered conflict." (Pine intersects with Mill, but not Main, according to Google Maps.)
Anyone have any ideas where these locations might really be? Or... was he making these sites up?
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Disney welcomes Gay Days in Florida as the feud with DeSantis rages on
https://archive.is/Hg7tQ
Rainbow-hued merchandise designed by Disney — including a plush Mickey Mouse waving a Pride flag — flew off the shelves almost as quickly as it could be restocked. Drag queen bingo was held. In the end, all 1,001 rooms at the host hotel were booked, though Gay Days chief executive Joseph Clark said travel warnings from civil rights and equality groups advising against travel to Florida had impacted turnout.
“For some it’s the safety aspect, for others, they don't want to spend money in a state that doesn't support them,” Clark said. “My message has been, ‘We need your help here in Florida.’”

This is a post a believing friend shared to their IG story. I know that the ceremony itself has started using the word “symbolic” more and I have heard historians and scholars using the word “ritual” when it comes to the temple; off the top of my head I am thinking about Jaxon Washburn using the word ritual a lot talking about his beliefs. And I remember that feeling very new to me at the time. So I am wondering if the church using the word “ritual” in the context of temple worship is something new for them or has it been used for awhile and I haven’t noticed in all my study. I feel like I have seen Jaxon on here before, if someone knows his handle, can you tag him?

2023.06.04 18:01 Horror_writer_1717 I got a job as a park ranger working in a fire tower. Now I wish I hadn't.

One hundred and forty-nine stairs. That’s how many there are to get up to the fire tower I’m posted at. I used to think getting up there meant safety. Now, I’m hoping it just means survival.
Climbing one hundred and forty-nine steps when you’re healthy is no small feat. When one of your legs has been torn to shreds, you’re bleeding from many places and you’re trying to get up there to wrap it, hoping there’s enough bandages so you don’t bleed to death, it’s a lot more difficult.
Then there are the stairs themselves which also count as a hazard when you have to hop up each one, causing pain to shoot through your injured leg. The stairs are skinny enough as they are, but the closer you get to the top, the smaller they get.
How do I know the exact number of steps? I counted them. I also counted which ones I miscalculated my jump, or brushed my foot against the step, or did something else that nearly sent me sailing over the rickety railing to my untimely death. The first time was one step number three, then fifteen, thirty-seven was a bad one, fifty-two, one oh seven, one-twenty, and finally one-forty-three. I guess it’s a good thing I’m deathly afraid of heights.
By now you may have figured out, I’m a park ranger. How did I end up playing this deadly game of hopscotch? It started a week ago when I got the job.
I was super excited, because I love working alone, and I love nature. What other job blends those two so well?
That excitement waned quite a bit when I arrived at the tower on my first day and looked up at those tiny metal steps I would have to climb to get to my job. The whole thing looked about as sturdy as if someone had built it with an erector set. I mean honestly, seeing surface rust on stairs that have to support your weight is terrifying, and I had to wonder how much I would be swaying when the wind really kicked up.
I wanted to close my eyes and just run up, but I didn’t dare. I paid attention to every single step, watching the metal bow under the weight of my foot, white-knuckling the railings as I went.
Finally, I reached the top and knocked on the trapdoor that had to be opened to let me in. I met the ranger who would be training me. His name was Bob, and he looked every bit how I envision a park ranger would look. Tall and thin, wiry but not scrawny, with a five o’clock shadow because he never had the time to shave properly.
Bob was one of those guys who seemed to always have a smirk on their face like they’ve just been told the greatest joke of all time, but they don’t want to let you in on it.
He spent the entire shift showing me around and then boring me to tears with all the little details of working in a fire tower. The place wasn’t bad. I was expecting an empty room with a card table and a radio, but this was nice. It reminded me of a small apartment or the inside of a small RV. There was a kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and minifridge. There was a couch and a couple of chairs, and most importantly, there was a bathroom.
At one point I thought there would be an outhouse at the base of the tower I would have to use. The thought of going down all those steps while holding number one or especially number two was something I didn’t even want to have nightmares about.
Just before the end of the shift, the next ranger came up. His name was Toby.
Toby looked nothing like I envisioned rangers looking like. He was overweight but made up for it by being under tall. He had a look of mischief in his eyes like a seventh grader who had just dropped a cherry bomb down the toilet and was trying to walk away looking nonchalant.
He smiled and shook my hand.
“So did Bob bore you to tears?” he said.
“Not quite to tears,” I said.
“Hey, I’m a good trainer,” Bob said looking offended yet still wearing that grin.
“Did you tell him everything?” Toby said.
“Pretty sure,” Bob said.
“Did you tell him about?” Toby leaned closer and whispered something in Bob’s ear that I couldn’t hear.
Bob’s grin grew.
“No, I didn’t tell him about that.”
“Maybe we should wait until he’s done training,” Toby said.
“What?” I said looking back and forth between them.
“We’ll tell you once you’re done job shadowing,” Bob said with that infuriating grin.
When we left, I was so focused on what they weren’t telling me, I nearly missed the first step and plunged to my death.
“Yeah, you’re gonna want to focus on those steps,” Bob said. “We had a coworker get hurt really bad because of them.”
“Is he ok now?”
Bob looked away.
Toby came over and volunteered, “He’s dead.”
That was definitely what I wanted to hear.
The next few days were a blur. Between total boredom with reading the procedure book and Bob grinning all the while refusing to tell me the big secret, I was getting super frustrated. I couldn’t wait for my first night working alone.
At least I had brought some supplies up to keep in the tower. Some snacks, a few books, and a tablet to make some notes on if I started writing a story.
Finally, the night came. I was working on my own for the first time. Surprisingly, Bob’s smile vanished as he told me.
“Did you ever read anything off of Reddit?” he said.
I shrugged.
“I don’t really read much other than books.”
“Sign up for Reddit, then go to the nosleep subreddit and look for a story called, ‘I was a park ranger stationed in a fire tower. It had a strange set of rules.’ Read that. It’ll tell you what to do.”
“Ok,” I said. “That’s the big secret? Read someone’s made-up story?”
“It might seem made up,” he said. “But trust me, follow the rules.”
I tried to read his expression to see if he was messing with me or not. In the five days I’d known him, there was never a time he wasn’t wearing that stupid grin, until now. His face was serious as a heart attack.
“Alright,” I said. “I’ll look it up later on my phone.”
“You really should do it as soon as I leave.”
“Ok.”
“Good luck.”
He stepped over to the door and went down the stairs. A few minutes later I heard his truck drive away.
“What the hell was that about?”
I stood in the middle of the room looking out at the beautiful trees, but not even seeing them. My mind was occupied by what Bob had said.
“It has to be a prank,” I said to the empty room. “Bob and Toby cooked this up to scare me on my first night. Well, I’m not falling for it.”
I did my first round of walking around on the outside walkway, looking for any sign of fires. We worked twelve-hour shifts, so I was working from seven am to seven pm. It was late summer and still warm enough to go without a jacket, at least on my first round. By the time I got to my fourth round, there was a chill in the air. I started doing my rounds from the inside and made a mental note to bring a jacket with me tomorrow.
It seemed odd to be talking about a jacket in late summer, but in the forest, the temperatures can vary wildly. It could be thirty degrees at night and eighty during the day.
I stepped back inside and saw my phone had lit up with a text message. I looked at it and it was Bob.
‘Did you read the rules yet?’
‘No,’ I texted back.
‘You don’t have much time.’
I knew this was a joke, it had to be a joke. The old timers pulling a fast one on the new guy, jerking his chain a little.
‘I’ll get right on it,’ I texted.
‘You better.’
I put my phone down and looked at the clock. It was ten minutes after ten. Outside was now completely dark, creating a very disconcerting illusion where when I would look outside, all I saw was my reflection. I decided to turn some lights off and go with just the bare minimum. That reduced the reflection some and I could see some trees outside.
I did a slow pan around, then grabbed a bag of chips and a soda, sat down, and worked on a crossword puzzle. That only lasted a half hour until I was bored with it. I picked up a book and started to read.
I woke sometime later, with my head resting on the back of the chair, chip crumbs all over my shirt, and the book laying on the floor.
I stretched and looked over at the clock. It read two-thirteen.
I jumped up, flinging the bag of chips to the floor, realizing I’d missed several checks, then ran around the room staring out at the trees. After my quick lap, I took a breath and did another slower lap to make sure there was no smoke. Thank God, there was none.
I chided myself for falling asleep on duty like that as I cleaned up my mess. I decided I should set an hourly alarm on my phone so that wouldn’t happen again.
When I picked up the phone I noticed there was a series of texts from Bob.
‘Did you read it yet?’
‘Why aren’t you answering?’
‘Are you alright?’
‘Don’t open the door for any reason.’
The last one sent chills down my spine.
Why would I open the door in the middle of the night?
As I was thinking this, another text came in.
‘For the love of God, read it!’
What the hell was wrong with this guy? Was he seriously losing sleep for a stupid joke?
I decided I would humor him and read the story. I opened my phone and went to the Reddit site. I had just signed up and put my information in when I heard static over the radio. I stepped to the receiver and checked it. Static blared out of it, making me jump as I heard a faint voice in it.
“Tower seven, do you read me?” I heard from a voice I could barely hear through the static.
I hesitated for a moment trying to remember if this was tower seven or not.
“Tower seven do you read me?” the voice said sounding a little more desperate.
I picked up the mic and keyed it.
“This is tower seven, go ahead.”
“It’s good to hear you tower seven,” the voice said suddenly clear. “I didn’t think you would answer.”
“Well, here I am, awake and alert, answering you,” I said. “What did you need?”
“I already have what I need,” the voice said sounding like it was chuckling. “I’d like to come visit if that’s alright.”
“Tower seven, this is base, who are you talking to?”
“I don’t know, someone on the radio,” I said into the mic.
“Seven, there’s no one else on this channel,” base said.
I got chills for a moment. What did that mean? How was I hearing someone that base couldn’t? Why would someone be calling now? Then it hit me that the base dispatcher was probably in on the joke too.
“Ok, base, maybe it was just some random transmission.”
“Tower seven,” the voice said. “Am I alright to come from a visit?”
I hesitated for a moment. What if it wasn’t a joke? Who the hell is walking through the forest at two thirty in the morning?
“Maybe we’ll do that visit another time,” I said.
“Visit?” base said. “What visit? Seven, you know it’s against policy to have visitors.”
“Yeah, sorry, base, I won’t be letting anyone visit.”
More static came over the radio. I could swear I could hear someone say something in the middle of it.
It sounded like, “We’ll see.”
I put down the mic and picked up my phone to read the story when I saw something off in the distance. It was a light, but it was hovering, like a helicopter. I switched my phone to camera mode, zoomed in, and took a picture. It was weird because the light was blue. I didn’t think helicopters had blue lights on them. Also, this light wasn’t flashing, it was solid the whole time. It came closer and I took another picture.
It floated even closer. It was mesmerizing. There was no sound. No hum, no whirring of tiny blades keeping it afloat like a drone, nothing. It was about the size of a basketball and glowing the most brilliant blue I’d ever seen. I reached out for it and it backed away from my hand. I took a step closer to the edge of the walkway, reaching out as far as my arm could stretch.
It backed away a few inches, just out of reach. I stood on my tiptoes, pushing against the railing trying to touch it. It moved away another inch.
I reached the tipping point and pinwheeled my arms to regain my balance and shove back against the railing.
I fell onto the walkway, landing hard on my backside and hitting the back of my head against the window. I looked up and the light was gone.
I shook my head, painfully stood up, and went back inside. I didn’t want to do a patrol but figured I’d better. After a slow walk around, I collapsed in the chair and set my alarm to go off in an hour.
After sitting there for a few minutes I could feel myself nodding off, so I opened my phone and started reading the story. After about ten minutes, I lowered my phone, eyes wide, hands shaking.
“It can’t be real,” I whispered. “It’s just a joke.”
I scrolled back through the story and re-read the rules.
  1. Never, under any circumstances, leave the fire tower until you are relieved.
  2. Turn off all lights between the hours of 2 and 3 am.
  3. If you receive a radio transmission or phone call between those hours, do not answer.
  4. If anyone knocks on the trapdoor during those hours tell them they’ll have to wait until morning. Do not open the door.
  5. If you see a glowing object floating toward the tower, don’t look at it. Cover your eyes and count to 50. When you open your eyes it should be gone. If not, cover and count to 50 again.
  6. If animals surround the tower don’t go down to look. Fire your flare gun into the air twice one minute apart, then lock yourself in the bathroom and hope for the best.
My skepticism started to waver. How could they have known about those things, unless…
There was a powerful banging at the trapdoor that made me jump.
“Who is it?” I said.
No one answered.
I minute later, the pounding resumed. I searched for anything I could use as a weapon. Digging through the silverware drawer and finding an old, dull, paring knife, I backed as far away from the trapdoor as possible while staying inside. The pounding repeated. Somehow through the fear that coursed through my veins, I found my voice.
“You’ll have to come back in the morning,” I said.
“But I’m here now tower,” said the voice from the radio. “Let… me… in... ”
The last three words changed from asking to demanding. The voice also became deeper and more menacing.
I didn’t answer. I just slid down to the floor and hugged my knees holding the knife in front of me, silently searching through the story on my phone to see if there was something I missed, some way I could remedy the situation. But there was nothing, and the end of the story didn’t give me much hope.
I covered my ears and closed my eyes as the pounding continued now mixed with the voice that was going back and forth between pleading and threatening. It whispered then it screamed. It sound like a young boy, then it sounded demonic.
I rocked back and forth trying to keep some measure of sanity as the assault continued. I began to wonder how long the trapdoor would hold before whatever it was broke through.
Then suddenly it stopped.
As happy as I was that there was no more pounding and yelling, I didn’t trust it. My entire body was on pins and needles. It felt like the calm before the storm.
The fire tower shook. It felt like an earthquake, only different. I stood and went out to the walkway to see what was happening. When I looked down, I couldn’t believe it. The tower was surrounded by animals of all kinds. Deer, squirrels, bears, moose, any forest animal you could imagine, and even a couple I couldn’t and didn’t want to identify.
As I leaned over watching this strange menagerie, a moose rammed into one of the tower’s legs. It sent a shockwave through the entire metal framework. By the time it got up to me the tower was shaking so hard it made me lose my balance.
I toppled over the edge and fell. I threw my arm out attempting to catch the rail, but only touched it with my fingertips.
I knew I was falling to my death, there was no doubt. The wind rushing in my ears didn’t drown out the sound of my screaming. It sounded odd like I was listening to someone else scream. I closed my eyes, not wanting to know when the end was coming.
Suddenly something hit me hard in the ribs. I looked and I had hit a tree limb, but it didn’t stop me. The branch broke sending me falling again until I hit another branch. This one tore a gash on my leg as I flipped head over heels and fell again. The next branch grazed my head and made me see stars. I bounced off another branch hitting my shoulder, then took one to the knee, and landed flat on my back on the ground.
I lay there dazed, injured, but alive and surprised to be so. As I tried to regain my bearings, I saw the animals rushing over to me. I doubted they wanted me to pet them while they licked my wounds and cared for me while singing Disney songs.
I jumped up as pain rocked my body from more places than I wanted to think about. I hopped over to the tower steps and began my long arduous journey, just a half step away from a bunch of animals that seemed dead set on my destruction.
About halfway up I realized there was no more pursuit, so I slowed trying to conserve energy.
I got to the top, unlocked the hatch and tried to push it open. It took several tries to get enough strength while balancing on one leg standing on the tiniest of all the tiny steps. As soon as I got it open, I turned and slammed it shut, locking it.
I hobbled into the room, found the first aid box and struggled to get to the couch. I wanted nothing more than to curl up in a ball and forget this day ever happened.
I tried to easily lay myself down, but ended up collapsing in an excruciating heap.
Once down, I focused on bandaging the leg since it was losing the most blood. Once done, I proceeded to bandage all the rest of the areas that needed.
“How are you feeling, tower seven?” I heard the voice say over the radio.
I didn’t answer.
“Oh, come on now tower, don’t be like that,” it said. “Talk to me. Let me in and we’ll have a conversation.”
I lay there trying to think of anything other than pain and this voice.
“There has to be punishment for disobeying the rules.”
My blood ran cold. How did that thing know about the rules?
I reached into my pocket and was astonished that my phone was there. It had a cracked screen, but was usable. I texted Bob.
‘I’m alive, somehow. I broke half the rules without knowing it because I read the story too late.’
‘Are you alright?’
I took pictures of my bandaged leg that was wrapped but blood was still seeping through. I took pictures of my battered face, and my bruised ribs. I sent them all to Bob.
‘Good Lord, man, what did you do?’
‘I fell out of the tower.’
‘You did what?’
‘Was leaning over the edge of the walkway when one of the animals smashed into the support leg and shook the tower, knocking me over.’
‘How are you alive?’
‘Tree caught me.’
‘I’ll call the paramedics and come in early to relieve you.’
‘I’ll be laying here on the couch, bleeding.’
Then I added, ‘I’ll follow the rules from now on.’
There was static on the radio and a faint voice said, “You’d better.”
***
When Bob unlocked the hatch and led the EMTs in, he didn’t have that grin on his face.
“You ok, kid?” he said.
“Hunky dory, how about you?” I said laying on the cushions that were soaked in my own blood.
“He might be in shock,” one of the EMTs said.
My rescue was an adventure in itself. When they examined me they informed me that my leg was broken. I was sweating trying to go back down those steps with a splint on. I could just see me slipping near the top and falling again. There didn’t seem to be any trees close enough to catch me on this side.
Apparently, the EMTs seemed to be thinking the same thing. Someone came up with the brilliant idea of tying me to a backboard and trying to carry me down the steps. After two EMTs nearly fell, they decided to tie it to a rope and lower me like a sack of potatoes.
They rigged up a rope around one of the support poles for the walkway. Watching the rope scrape along the edges of the wood, fraying as it went was probably more terrifying than anything I’d experienced last night.
Floating in the air, spinning slowly didn’t help my fear of heights any. I decided to close my eyes and try to stay as still as possible so the balance wouldn’t be disturbed and slide me out of the end to fall to my death.
I was extremely grateful when the board hit the ground. My adrenaline finally crashed and I fell into a deep sleep as they loaded me into the ambulance.
***
Truth be told, I’m absolutely terrified to go back to the tower. It’s not like I have a lot of choices. Park ranger is a good paying job and sitting around watching for fires is about the easiest job I’ve ever heard of.
If you take away the supernatural voices, bizarre wildlife, strange lights, and the stairs of death.
I’m hoping paying attention to the rules will keep me safe.
I’m posting this as a warning. If your job has some strange rules, make sure you follow them, no matter how stupid you think they might be.

2023.06.04 17:57 Horror_writer_1717 I got a job as a park ranger working in a fire tower.

2023.06.04 16:47 FreddyTeddy5 Charlestown, MA man convicted in involvement in slaying of two armored car guards in Hudson, NH in 1994 gets a reduced sentence. But, I think it is possible that a Charlestown, MA crew was not responsible for the 1994 killings, but rather a Whitey Bulger South Boston crew, and the FBI covered it up.

So Anthony Shea, one of the members of a Charlestown robbery crew, got his sentence for murdering two armored car guards in Hudson, NH in August 1994 reduced from a life sentence to a 35 year sentence- https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/06/02/metro/i-have-lot-regrets-charlestown-bank-robber-says-1990s-carjacking-slaying-two-security-guards/
So, the idea that Stephen Burke and Whitey Bulger didn't like each other checks out.
Also, a 2013 Boston.com article claimed that Whitey Bulger did extort American IRA commander Joseph Murray- https://www.boston.com/uncategorized/noprimarytagmatch/2013/01/07/convicted-marijuana-dealer-loses-appeal-claimed-fbi-lied-in-his-1980s-case-to-protect-whitey-bulge#:~:text=NoPrimaryTagMatch-,Convicted%20marijuana%20dealer%20loses%20appeal%3B%20claimed%20FBI%20lied%20in%20his,case%20to%20protect%20Whitey%20Bulger.&text=A%20federal%20appeals%20court%20has,James%20%E2%80%9CWhitey'

THE BOOK OF MORMON: “WRITTEN TO THE LAMANITES, WHO ARE A REMNANT OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL…”
“Wherefore, it [The Book of Mormon] is an abridgment of the record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites – Written to the Lamanites, who are a remnant of the house of Israel, and also to Jew and Gentile . . . .” How do we know The Book of Mormon was written to the Lamanites? The Title Page “Translated [“from the plates of Nephi”] by Joseph Smith, Jun.” is described as “An Account Written by The Hand of Mormon Upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi.” It was not produced with the aid of a chocolate-colored stone in a stovepipe hat. So what is the problem? In Spencer Kimball’s time, Lamanites were confidently identified by the tens of millions. Since the advent of DNA science, the Church can not confidently identify a Lamanite anywhere in the world.

VERSE 1 Grew up in the French Court, Oui, oui, bonjour
I’ve seen people misinterpret this line online as indicating that Anne Boleyn was French. That is NOT the case. Anne was an English woman, the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, a prominent diplomat who served both Henry VIII and his father Henry VII, and his wife Lady Elizabeth Howard (part of the powerful Howard family), but as was fairly common for the time, Anne was sent away from her family to complete her education in the households of various noble families. Those families just happened to be some of the rulers of the Netherlands and France.
Anne was sent to join the household of Margaret of Austria in 1513 (in the low countries, in modern day Belgium), when Anne was either 12 or 6 (Anne’s exact birth year is unknown and there are NUMEROUS debates about which year is more likely - 1501 or 1507). Margaret of Austria was the daughter of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and was serving as the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands at the time. Anne’s father Thomas had been sent as an envoy to Margaret the year before and got along so well with her that he managed to secure Anne’s place at the time. Margaret of Austria was highly educated and cultured and her court had a reputation for having an extremely well-stocked library and art collection. Scholars, poets, and artists were constantly around the court. Here, Anne gained a fluency in French, which led to Mary Tudor choosing her for her household in the French Court in 1514.
About a year after she went to Margaret of Austria’s court, Anne was sent to serve Mary Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister, who was marrying the French King, Louis XII. Anne’s sister Mary probably served Mary Tudor as well, but it’s a little unclear how long either of them served her, as many of her English attendants were dismissed the day after the wedding. Less than three months into the marriage, the French king died. Although Mary Tudor went back to England (and scandalously married Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, without Henry VIII’s knowledge or permission), Anne Boleyn stayed on in France and joined the household of the new Queen, the 15-year-old Claude. Queen Claude also loved scholarly manuscripts and art, so her court was full of such beautiful things and exciting people.
By the time Anne was recalled to England in January 1522, she had spent 7-8 years of her life on mainland Europe and almost that long in the French court. She would have been there from ages 12-20 OR ages 6-14. Either way, although she was English born, it’s more than fair to say that she “grew up in the French court.”
“Oui Oui Bonjour” means “yes yes, hello” in French.
Life was a chore so (she set sail), 1522 came straight to the UK - All the British dudes, lame (Epic fail)
Anne Boleyn was summoned back to England in January 1522 by her father to marry her Irish cousin, James Butler, in order to settle a dispute over a title and some land. This marriage fell through for an unknown reason.
At this time, Anne Boleyn’s sister Mary Boleyn was at Henry VII’s court. Historical records indicate that Mary Boleyn was Henry’s mistress, and rumors abound that one or both of Mary’s children were Henry’s, as opposed to her husband William Carey’s, but there’s no definitive evidence on the subject. Anne joined the court at least by March 1522 as a maid of honor to Queen Catherine of Aragon, and quickly became very well known there. She was described as being very intelligent, stylish, and quick-witted. Apparently she had numerous admirers among the men at court, including the poet Sir Thomas Wyatt. Anne actually entered into a secret betrothal with Henry Percy, son of the Earl of Northumberland, but this was broken off when Percy’s father and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (who was acting as the king’s chief courtier at this time) both refused to support the match.
“The UK” and “British dudes” - Technically the UK (United Kingdom) wasn’t called that until 1800, when Parliament passed an act uniting Great Britain and Ireland as “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.” In Anne Boleyn’s time, it was just called England and its inhabitants were only called English, not British (although the Romans called the British Isles Britannia and occasionally referred to the larger island as Great Britain, the name wasn’t widely used to refer to the kingdom on the British Isles until 1707, when the kingdoms of England and Scotland were officially joined into one political union).
Ooh, I wanna dance and sing - Politics, not my thing
Anne was an extremely accomplished dancer, singer, and played numerous musical instruments. However, after Henry put her in a position of power, Anne actually wielded tremendous influence on his policy, particularly as it related to religion. There’s evidence that Anne persuaded Henry to read so called “heretical” pamphlets by Protestant writers about how kings had a responsibility to control the Catholic church and stop its excesses. She also was very influential in granting petitions, receiving diplomats, and was a patron to numerous nobles and artists, including the famed Hans Holbein.
I don’t love this line and some of the others in the musical because of the ditzy way in which Anne is portrayed, which is very different from reality. However, I try to remind myself that she’s just a character, and she isn’t meant to be historically accurate.
Ooo, but then I met the King - And soon my daddy said, you should try and get ahead
It appears that Anne caught Henry VIII’s eye in 1526. Having learned from her sister’s example though, Anne refused to sleep with him or become his mistress. She quickly gained the ability to influence the king.
There isn’t much evidence that her father Thomas Boleyn actually pushed Anne toward her relationship with Henry, but this is a common portrayal of the situation in books, film, and TV shows.
He wanted me, huh, obviously, Messaging me like everyday, Couldn't be better, then he sent me a letter and who am I kidding, I was prêt-à-manger Ooh, sent a reply, Ooh, just saying hi, Ooh, you're a nice guy, I'll think about it maybe, XO baby
Henry VIII wrote Anne many love letters which still exist today. You can read them here. These letters give us most of the information we have about their relationship, including the fact that Anne refused to sleep with him for much of their seven-year courtship.
Unfortunately, we don’t have Anne’s replies to Henry, but evidence indicates that she really did avoid his advances for a long time and
Prêt-à-manger literally means “ready to eat” in French.
Here we go (You sent him kisses), I didn't know I would move in with his missus (What?), Get a life (You're living with his wife?), Like, what was I meant to do?
As I noted previously in the blog post on No Way, Anne Boleyn was already living in the same palace as Henry and Catherine even before Henry noticed her. Anne was Catherine’s maid of honor, and thus, lived at court along with many many other nobles and aristocrats. However, in December 1528, Henry set Anne up with her own “very fine lodging…close to his own,” as reported by a French diplomat of the time, and there are lots of reports that she basically had her own shadow court and was acting as a second queen at that time.
“What was I meant to do?” has a slightly humorous effect in this song, but it reflects the reality that Anne Boleyn really didn’t have many choices here. She was able to resist Henry’s sexual advances, but she couldn’t fend him off altogether because he was the king, and her livelihood and the rest of her family’s livelihoods really depended on his favor. She tried to make the best of the situation by refusing to sleep with him and insisting that he marry her, but she didn’t have much control over it beyond that.
CHORUS Sorry not sorry 'bout what I said - I'm just tryna have some fun
In an interview with the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, co-writer Lucy Moss said that “Sorry, not sorry” was directly inspired by one of Anne Boleyn’s mottoes in life - “Let them grumble; that is how it’s going to be.” Anne very briefly adopted the Latin version of this motto in 1530, “Aisi sera groigne qui groigne.” She even had this motto embroidered on her servants’ livery coats! This demonstrates Anne’s feelings about those protesting her elevation and the king’s attempts to get rid of Catherine of Aragon. She didn’t end up using it very long - the imperial ambassador Eustace Chapuys, who /hated/ Anne, claimed that she changed it once she realized it was actually Margaret of Austria’s motto (Groigne qui groigne et, vive Bourgoigne). However, Anne spent several years at the court of Margaret of Austria as a child, so it seems unlikely that she wouldn’t have realized this. Another possible explanation is that she just realized the motto wasn’t doing anything to calm the tensions.
Don't worry, don't worry, don't lose your head I didn't mean to hurt anyone - LOL, say oh well - Or go to hell I'm sorry not sorry 'bout what I said - Don't lose your head
“Don’t lose your head” is a common colloquialism meaning “don’t lose your temper.” I tried to figure out where this saying came from and how old it is, but didn’t have much success. Some people do say that it actually originally specifically was referring to executions by beheading, so it works very well in this context.
The lyric obviously refers to Anne’s ultimate demise, but it also refers to Anne Boleyn’s infamous temper. Anne was brilliant, but it’s well documented that when angry, she often said spiteful, threatening things. One courtier said that she spoke to her uncle once in words that "shouldn't be used to a dog." It’s also reported that she said if Henry ever left her as Regent when he was away, she would have Princess Mary killed.
VERSE 2 Three in the bed and the little one said, If you wanna be wed, make up your mind Her or me, chum - Don't wanna be some Girl in a threesome, Are you blind?
Reports from the time indicated that Anne and Henry had a very stormy relationship and had a tendency to have huge arguments and then later would reunite blissfully. One report described their relationship as “storm followed sunshine, sunshine followed storm.” We also know from Henry’s love letters that Anne refused to sleep with him for most of their pre-marital relationship, so there’s definitely a lot of truth to the fact that Anne demanded things from Henry that really no other woman ever had.
“Three in the bed and the little one said” - refers to the nursery rhyme “Ten in the Bed,” which has an unknown origin.
Ooh, don't be bitter, Ooh, 'cause I'm fitter Ooh, why hasn't it hit her? He doesn't want to bang you, Somebody hang you
“Somebody hang you” is both modern day slang for telling someone to kind of fuck off and also refers to an incident in 1531, before Anne was queen. Anne “said to one of the Queen’s ladies that she wished all the Spaniards in the world were in the sea; and on the other replying, that, for the honor of the Queen, she should not say so, she said that she did not care anything for the Queen, and would rather see her hanged than acknowledge her as her mistress.”
Here we go - (Your comment went viral) I didn't really mean it but rumours spiral (Wow Anne, way to make the country hate you) Mate, what was I meant to do?
Anne really was pretty unpopular at the time. The English people really loved Catherine of Aragon; she had been their queen since 1509 and had seen the country through many tough times, including serving as regent while Henry was away at war and publicly begging for the King’s mercy for various subjects on several occasions. Records indicate that crowds shouted out encouragement to Catherine of Aragon whenever they saw her during the king’s “Great Matter.”
In addition, the entire concept that a man could set aside his wife really scared women, as it was an attack on traditional family values and a threat to their own security. At the time, women depended entirely on their husbands. If their husbands could set them aside, they would be ruined and destitute. In November 1531, a mob of women (supposedly 7,000-8,000) actually went after Anne while she was dining at a house on a river; she only narrowly escaped them by crossing the river in a boat. This wasn’t the last riot of women against Anne Boleyn either; another one happened in 1532.
Finally, apart from the common people’s general dislike of her, plenty of nobles hated her as well, as she had a temper and a sharp tongue and was known for being rather arrogant. She also played a large role in influencing Henry VIII and was very active in her support of or opposition to various policies.
VERSE 3 Tried to elope, But the pope said nope, Our only hope was Henry He got a promotion, Caused a commotion, Set in motion the C of E The rules were so outdated, Us two wanted to get x-rated Soon, ex-communicated, Everybody chill, its totes God's will
“Tried to elope but the pope said nope” - Henry started asking Pope Clement VII for a dispensation to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn starting around 1527. They likely thought this would be pretty easy, as there was precedent for royals getting annulments and marrying again. However, Catherine of Aragon just happened to be the aunt of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who sacked Rome in May 1527 and took the Pope prisoner. However, even after the Pope was released, he avoided issuing any sort of official ruling on Henry VIII’s petition. He did allow for Cardinal Wolsey (of England, and then Henry’s chief courtier) to hold an ecclesiastical court on the matter, but stipulated that another papal legate had to be there as well. This legate, Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggio, had been instructed to delay things as long as possible, as the Pope was hoping that Henry would get sick of Anne and the issue would go away. Although the court case lasted from May 31, 1529 to July, Campeggio adjourned it for a summer recess. The court never met again. Wolsey was later arrested and likely would have been convicted and executed for treason if he hadn’t died from illness beforehand. Henry eventually left Catherine of Aragon completely, riding away one day without saying goodbye and having her moved to another household.
Henry and Anne married secretly in November 1532. She quickly became pregnant. The new Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer (formerly Anne’s family chaplain) declared Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon null and void in May 1533, and shortly thereafter, declared Henry and Anne’s marriage to be good and valid.
“He got a promotion, Caused a commotion, Set in motion the C of E” In 1533, the English House of Commons (with encouragement from Henry) forbade all appeals to Rome and penalized those who tried to introduce papal bulls into England. This set up the modern Church of England, separate from Rome and the Pope’s influence. After this, Pope Clement VII finally acted, condemning Henry’s marriage to Anne, declaring the marriage to Catherine legal, and ordering Henry to return to Catherine in March 1534. The Pope also announced a provisional sentence of excommunication against Henry VIII and Thomas Cranmer. However, his excommunication wouldn’t be formally enacted until 1538, after Henry and his courtiers dissolved the monasteries in England, dismantled several of the shrines, and executed a ton of Catholic rebels involved in the Pilgrimage of Grace.
In late 1534, Parliament declared Henry the supreme head of the Church of England.
“The rules were so outdated” probably refers to Henry not being able to annul his marriage to his first wife.
At this break, a section of Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream plays. This song was written in 1842 and is one of the most frequently used wedding marches.
Henry's out every night on the town, Just sleeping around, like what the hell
Keep in mind, before Henry got with Anne, he slept with her sister Mary enough that LOTS of people believed that Mary’s children were his. That’s gotta make you paranoid. And he already had an acknowledged illegitimate child with another noblewoman, Bessie Blount.
Henry started taking mistresses during Anne’s first pregnancy (couples at the time generally abstained from sex during pregnancy to avoid hurting the child). was almost certainly sleeping with Anne’s first cousin Margaret Shelton, who served as one of her maids of honor, for around six months in 1535. Finally, starting in February 1536, reports came out that Henry was super interested in another of Anne’s maids-of-honor, Jane Seymour. We all know how that turned out. Henry reportedly gave Jane a locket with a miniature portrait of himself inside; Anne ripped it off her neck when she saw it. Henry was betrothed to Jane a day after Anne’s execution in May 1536 and married her less than two weeks after the execution.
If that's how it's gonna be, Maybe I'll flirt with a guy or three, Just to make him jell
/sigh/ This is a vast oversimplification of the entire situation at hand, but yes, Anne was known for being flirtatious and charming throughout her time at the English Court in the tradition of courtly love. However, she was specifically accused of adultery with one of her musicians Mark Smeaton, courtiers Sir Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston, and Sir William Brereton, and her own brother George Boleyn. Most historians believe that these charges and the evidence to support them were made up by Thomas Cromwell, a powerful courtier, in order to bring down Anne. Anne had argued with Cromwell over the redistribution of church revenues from the dissolution of the monasteries (Anne wanted the revenues distributed to charitable and educational institutions, Cromwell wanted to give it to the king and take his own cut as well) and foreign policy (they disagreed over whether to ally with France or the Holy Roman Empire).
Henry finds out and he goes mental, He screams and shouts, Like so judgmental, You dam-ned witch Mate, just shut up, I wouldn't be such a b- If you could get it up Here we go (Is that what you said?), And now he's going 'round like off with her head (No)
There’s a report of one argument between Henry and Anne after the investigation against her began, but most evidence seems to indicate that Henry just left a tournament one day and never spoke to Anne again. She was arrested soon after, taken to the Tower of London, and tried and convicted of adultery, incest, and high treason. However, Henry and Anne had definitely had some serious arguments before Anne was brought down. There are numerous reports of them fighting and shouting at each other.
“you damned witch” - It’s pretty common to hear that Anne Boleyn was a witch or engaged in witchcraft in some way now, but this wasn’t a real charge at the time. However, in later years, various people spread the rumor. One Catholic writer Nicholas Sander described Anne Boleyn as having six fingers on her right hand and having a projecting tooth (but he said this in 1585, so like - how would he know?). He also alleged that she miscarried a monstrously deformed child. None of Anne’s contemporaries actually mention her having an extra finger, projecting tooth, or deformed child- and considering how much they hated her, wouldn’t they have mentioned it at the time if she did?
“wouldn’t be such a b- if you could get it up” - As I noted before in the post on Wives, there’s no historical evidence about Henry’s abilities in bed to support this line. However, this may refer to one of the grounds for the annulment of his marriage to Anna of Cleves later in his life, as Henry claimed he could not consummate the marriage with Anna. It also just seems to further demonstrate Anne’s known habit of saying things in anger that she regretted later.

2023.06.04 14:30 Bfitness93 Do you think we should vote Libertarian or Republican?

This has been a long time debate. I vote Republican despite being a Libertarian, personally. I do this because the Libertarians virtually have no chance at winning. Maybe 1 percent of people actually vote that way. So you are kind of losing your vote in a sense. The Democrat party is so terrible, I don't think we should risk it. If you vote Libertarian you make it more likely a Democrat wins since you're not voting for the stronger than Libertarian Republican party.
I find convincing people of an anarchist or miniarchist society is a losing battle despite what facts or evidence you have people will dismiss you as a lunatic or an extremist. Libertarian ideas are too far out there for the majority of people. I been studying economics for almost 10yrs now. Read tons of books from the top economists we all know such as Milton Friedman, David Friedman, Thomas Sowell, Ludwig Von Mises, Carl Menger, Friedrich Hayek, Murray Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, etc etc. Despite all the evidence I use, many just ignore it.
I think we have to convince people of change in small increments. Republicans and Libertarians are some what similar. We are a lot closer to them than Democrats by a large margin. So if we vote Republican we can increase the odds Democrats lose and we can attempt to change the Republican party into a more Libertarian party.
Building the Libertarian party from the bottom is a long painful process that increases the odds of putting the worst people in power and the biggest uphill battle trying to get over a hundred million people on our side along with a very low success rate that our efforts will work.
What do you think?
