Hoping to get some help with this matter here:
My parents moved from their primary home last year into a new one. They also had a rental property in Toronto at the time, the bills for which were always mailed to their primary home.
After moving, my parents forgot to update their address with the City of Toronto for their rental property. So, the mail kept going to their old home and the new occupants did not inform them of any mail (I know, they should have set up mail forwarding...).
Yesterday, during a chat with some friends, they found out about the City sending mail for vacant property declaration and wondered why they did not receive one. I checked their tax account today and realized that they basically did not update their address and so they have late payment interest + penalties on property tax + vacant home tax. It has also been sent to revenue collections.
We will call the City tomorrow but in the meantime was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this? I assume they are out of luck regarding the interest + penalties on the property tax but can we get the vacant home tax waived? The property was rented out throughout the time, and proof of that is available via rental agreements, rents received, building records, etc.

don’t think this is ever going to leave my mouth in real life but I(24M) think I’m in love with my best friend’s(24M)sister(26F). Ever since a very young age me and friend have always been close but I have also been good friends with his sister and my feelings for her have almost always been friendly and nothing more but 2 days ago we all went drinking with a couple of other friends and unknowingly to them I had a lot on my plate(I should point out we where drinking in one of our friends houses) so when everyone went downstairs to continue the party elsewhere my friends sister we’ll call Emma comes upstairs to check on my and we have a nice talk for a while and she gave me some advice on what to do with myself(I don’t normally have personal issues so someone actually needing to give me advice has been very rare in the past) so after a while we went downstairs and I for some reason felt it was a good Idea to drink more.And more…And more,It got so bad I had to lie down on the couch and ask for a bucket because I felt like I was going to vomit and progressively feeling worse in my drunken state I remember saying Emma’s name to myself over and over and it making me feel a little better?(really strange but drunk me has had a history of being pretty strange)Anyway despite this I vomited barely missing the fluffy couch that I would’ve dreaded to see the aftermath of my poor aim but now is probably the time to mention my best friend which we’re going to call Tyler(a little late for names but bare with me)wanted to stay at our buddies house while Emma wanted to go back to there house and for some reason I wanted to go with Emma but feeling the way I did I physically couldn’t so I said bye but then the words “I love you” slipped out of my mouth. We have said we love each other before in sibling like way including Tyler but this time felt so different for some reason and after said what I did I remember her saying “I love you too” and giving me a kiss on the head as she left. I have no doubt this was meant in the sibling type way and not romantically by the way but to this moment I can’t shake the feeling and know I’m the only one who feels this way but looking back on all the time we’ve spent together is making me realise these feelings have been repressed over and over and despite how much I want to confess these feelings no matter what I don’t think I ever can.Mostly because I can’t ever bring myself to risk losing Tyler as my friend/brother figure and I can’t lose Emma for the same reasons.I truly do not know what to do.

Question is as the title says. For background, I'm a fresh CompSci graduate from Taiwan and I'm currently considering on looking for a job from Taiwan or from Indonesia. When doing the maths on Taiwan part, I think I could get around 3.5M~6.5M IDR of savings per month. But the thing is, the living cost in Taipei is hell, so I'm also considering Indonesia.
I'm looking for a job as a developer (software/web/mobile app) or as software QA, but I haven't made up my mind yet since the salary in Indo seems to be around 4M~8M in Jakarta for that profession. But the thing is, I don't know anything about the living cost and rent back in Indo, so I'm here to ask about it.
So my simplest question would be, how much money can I save per month in Indo as a fresh graduate with an entry level comp sci job?
I'd also like to ask a lot of other things, like

• How much the living cost would be in Indo/Jakarta?
• What counts as a good kos-kosan?
• What websites are good for Indo job hunting?
• Is it true that there really a big (doubled??) salary increase when I get a promotion/change jobs after a year or three?

I'm sorry if that's too many questions for one post but I guess I really need some guidance on this.

For context, I am a 19 year old female who just finished her first semester of college. Since this post is about money, I also have to add that my parents are wealthy because my dad owns several companies.
I went to a boarding school from ages 14-18, and my dad would give me $150 per month to pay for school supplies, toiletries, snacks, and other things for my dorm room.
After I graduated high school, my dad declined to increase my allowance even though the monthly expenses in college are so much more. He said that if I want more money, I have to earn it myself. So that summer, I got a full time job at a business that belonged to a family friend, and he was kind enough to drive me to and from work every day since I didn’t have my driver’s license yet. I limited my spending during the summer so that I could make my savings last all year in college. It was stressful, but it worked.
Now that I’ve been back home for about 2 weeks, I’m broke and I have $6 left in my bank account.
Recently my dad sat me down and told me that he would be ending my allowance. The reason is that I am not doing enough house chores and I’m not helping my mom take care of my 87 year old grandmother enough. I would have been happy to help, but they never asked me to. They just expected me to volunteer. My dad says that my behavior shows my lack of appreciation for my parents and that it would be unfair to keep paying me if I’m acting like this.
I registered for summer classes a while back so I wouldn’t fall behind in my college credits, and the classes start about 1 month after the spring semester ended. I had originally planned to use the 1 month break to relax because college makes me very burnt out, and for the rest of summer I was just going to focus on my studies and rely on the $150/month from my dad. When I told my parents this, they said that it was unacceptable to waste a month of my summer doing nothing. They made it seem like I was crazy to think I can just not work all summer. When I brought up the allowance, they said, “you cannot expect us to help you if you are unwilling to help yourself.”
My dad wants me to use this time to work at one of his companies full time (40 hrs a week), which I have been doing for a bit because I’m too afraid to tell him no. Even though my dad helped me get my driver’s license last august, my parents made no arrangements for me to drive one of their four cars, so I can’t drive. I didn’t get to choose my hours of availability for work because I have to ride with my dad to the office at 8am every day. And every day I have to ask around for someone who is available to give me a ride home after my shift is over. I told him I want to work part time so I can focus on applying for scholarships & have more free time but he said “No, don’t sell yourself short.” He wants me to continue working part time when classes start.
So they expect me to hold down a job while taking rigorous courses with no financial support from them and no car. Am I wrong for thinking this is unreasonable?

While receiving a quote for a first floor bathroom renovation it was recommeded to remove the cast iron pipe that is used for the toilet, about 7 ft of pipe in the basement. It would be replaced with PVC.
The cast iron is not well supported and there is concern it could eventually collapse so at a minimum the recommended additional cistern supports. The house was built in the 1890s and I think the pipes were added after it was built since part of a joist was cut out to make way for the pipe. Any way to get an estimate of when the pipes were put in? I see monitor iron works on one of them.

There is more cast iron pipes leading to the second floor. I do not see the manufacturer listed on these pipes but I understand vertical cast iron can rust out more quickly than horizontal.
They are quoting 10k for the cast iron removal with pvc replacemnt in the bathroom/basement, not second floor. Is this a reasonable quote?
We have no idea what the condition of the pipes are on the inside, outside it looks okay but vertical pipes are hidden by walls.
I would appreciate any advice on this.

I (20F) just moved into a really nice house with 2 F and 1 M. One of the girls, we’ll call her Catie, was on the previous lease with 3 other girls. One of the PAST girls, that lived here, OVERCHARGED the other ladies for the energy, internet, and water bill. For that matter, she was evicted. Hence, how I came to play. Apparently, the last month before she left she never paid the bills and left them for Catie and the other girls. Which in my opinion, I find petty and ridiculous. The girl is now asking Catie for the money to pay the bill with the overcharged amount!!!!! She is also threatening to sue with her “rich family lawyer”. I know she is definitely doing something illegal and I dont want Catie to get screwed over. I just want to help my roommate out, because I have dealt with this in the past (not something SUPER similar), which is why I come to here. Can anyone give advice on how to go about this?

I stopped talking to my mum in 2019 after a few years of arguments and her behaviour escalating. When I finally realised she had been emotionally abusive my whole life I cut all communication and blocked her everywhere. She even emailed my work email. I had to get a solicitor to remove her from my house and she eventually left in 2020 and moved 12 hours drive away. She has sent cards to my new address that I’ve never opened but I’ve mostly been able to ignore her as she’s so far away. This week she called me on her friends mobile and said she wanted to reconcile. She said she had knocked on my door earlier in the day but we were out. I told her I was not ready to see her. The following day she put something through my letterbox and sat in her car on my street for 2.5 hours. I thought that she had run out of money and that was why she had come but it seems she thinks I’m in an abusive relationship and was trying to save me (I am not). She is very delusional generally and truly believes that what she thinks is correct and then sits on it and reinforces her ideas for months and years. I know that if I get in contact with her she won’t believe that I’m not being abused but I’m also unsure as to what she will do next. Has anyone else had a situation like this? Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

My bf and I are moving out of state and are looking at a rental that is slightly out of our price range, but we really like it and timing wise, it’s perfect.
There is a clause that says we can sublease the basement apartment. According to the rental listing, in the past (2020) the apartment has gone for $700/mo. so we are thinking we could lease it for $800 or $850 monthly. Obviously, this means the price of our rent could potentially decrease significantly, but only if we subleased.
It seems lucrative. However, having no experience managing property, we’re apprehensive about liability, etc.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it worth all the rigamarole involved?

I'm already working in a plant construction (113 miles away from my house) and i love it, its my first job and i have passion toward it, but I'm afraid that my parent/family will disapprove of me going for this career path, they always try to tell me to leave it and look for something else when all i want is go around the world and see other people and build plants.
p.s: i live in a country that don't believe like women can be on construction nor travel alot for work, because everyone think any job that can make your life as "future mother" is what you should get! aka somthing next door or don't work is even better.

Not sure if this has been discussed here, but Fromville seems ok to me. I know I'm a weirdo but I honestly can see myself living there without much problem. No rent, no bills, free food and water - this alone makes it something of a paradise. No phones with annoying calls and texts. Seemingly no predators in the woods or the lake. Most of the community work seems to be physical which is good for the body and mind. Just make sure you lock doors and windows before sundown, put on some blinds, hang the talisman, and you're golden. You could even live in an rv or a bus as long as you have a talisman.
Of course with all the new crazy stuff coming up, it's likely gonna turn into a hellhole but I wouldn't mind being a regular Fromville resident for a few years.

coming back was a mistake, i dont think i can deal with this shit until the end of august. my sister is literally so fucking annoying and rude, my mom wants me to be nice to her because she needs "guidance" or whatever but honestly at this point she can go to hell. i dont give a fuck what happens to her at this point because any type of kindness is wasted on her. im sick of sitting in this dirty ass house, im sick of not being able to even cook a meal because the kitchen is constantly so disgusting. im tired of everyone here and i cant wait to leave. im going to do EVERYTHING i can so that i dont have to come back to this shitty unwalkable town next summer. i hate this so much.

22 Male, software engineer making about 78k in MCOL area (expect yearly raises). I get 5% match through employer, so currently I'm putting 5% into traditional 401k invested 100% into S&P 500 via vanguard. Then I have a Roth IRA that I plan on maxing every year currently through fidelity invested 70% FZROX and 30% FZILX. I don't have my emergency fund built to 6 months yet but I sprinkle money in there when I can.
My take home is around $4500 a month and my only debt is $40000 student loans at 4.5% ($500 month)

(All savings accounts are through buckets in Ally HYSA)
Should I change my Roth IRA investments to something else like 100% S&P500? Is there anything that jumps out that I'm doing wrong or could do better? I've been lurking on a bunch of similar subs trying to get the best plan for my future, but I'm very new and still learning. Thanks for reading

Ok so I think they are actually called acupuncture pillows but they are pokey pillows in my house.
I just wanted to share if maybe others may benefit. I'm am not a doc of any kind and it wasn't recommended to me, I found these by chance. I personally find that they can cut a migraine down about 2 levels. Like from a 7 to a 5. This is not medical advice, only personal experience.
The one I have is by Kinsa.thre are other brands that I'm sure work just as well, but that's what I have These are memory foam filled pillows with spikey plastic pieces on the outside. They come in lumbar support, mini blanket, and other shapes. I use the lumbar support the most because it also fits at my neck.
I recommend wearing a thin t shirt as the spikes are a bit sharp but don't cut. They can be used on bed or couch but sometimes the hard pressure from the floor is better.
I've found that if I lay on them, sometimes it feels like intense pressure is building. I leave it for 30 seconds to a minute then shift , I get a nice patch of relief. Rinse and repeat from the neck down to lower back or reverse.i use it on my scalp too but for much smaller increments. Some spots I use it up to 20 minutes such as lower back, neck and shoulder areas.
The pokey feeling does alleviate rather quickly. Initially your thought might be " uh wtf is this torture" try to relax, shift the pillow to a spot where you feel it but not hurting you. Squishy areas taking the brunt can help.
It's not a cure, but it has made a difference between miserable and functional on occasion for me. Or at least some sleep. They are a bit expensive, but if you have an fsa card, you can buy them in certain places, including online.

I (42F) grew up in a very abusive (physically and mentally) family in Eastern Europe. As a result, I grew up with severe clinical depression and a food disorder.
12 years ago I had a disastrous relationship which exacerbated my depression. I stopped going out and started overeating. My parents persuaded me to not move out and live in their (large) basement for free.
For 10 years I worked from home and my mental and physical health deteriorated. My parents knew but basically abandoned me. The mental abuse continued. I gradually became morbidly obese. Twice my mother gave me poisonous substances.
In the last 2 years I became very ill - diabetes, heart disease etc. I became immobile. I lost the ability to work but don't qualify for disability. I became 100% reliant on my parents and completely isolated from the outside world. We live in the same house, in different apartments.
The problem is that I haven't been able to shop or cook for myself in the last year. They do it for me sometimes but it depends on their mood. My dad decided to go live in Italy (his lifelong dream) and never calls me. He promised to give me $500/month for food and meds, then he said it will be $300/month, he did give me 300 twice but then he "forgot" and I don't want to beg. My mother is beautiful and still youthful and resents having to take care of her adult and obese failure of a daughter. She only has to cook a simple meal once a couple of days but it really depends on her mood, plus she's always very verbally abusive to me and I try to avoid her as much as possible.
So I copied their credit card info and, whenever they forget to feed me, I order food online. Last year my father found out. There was a huge row and he said that he had never been so ashamed in his life. I am ashamed too!!! But this was the only way I could think of of getting food. The situation didn't change after the revelation so I continued ordering food. They know and they hate me for it.
Well, last month my father finally agreed to pay $6000 for gastric sleeve surgery for me. It was performed in Turkey. I'm currently 2 weeks post-op and losing weight fast! But I'm still bedridden and need some care. It is very obvious to me that they do not want to provide it. When we got back home, they forgot to buy me the necessary food items. So I ordered them with their cards again (about $40). My father went back to Italy. My mother opened my new fridge, saw that there was food in it and asked with a smile if I bought it with their cards. I said yes. She stopped talking to me and has now completely abandoned me. I am looking at aftermarket headlight options. I’ve had my 2014 Trail Edition since new and it’s time for a facelift. Right now I have Xenon Depot upgraded bulbs but I want a fresh look with blacked out housings.
My first question, which ones work with Daytime Running Lights via the switch only? In other words, I want to be able to run dark when the engine is on and only have the DRLs when I activate them.
I recently purchased the AlphaRex Pro’s, but took them off the day after I installed them (back to my original configuration now). The AlphaRex Pro’s were not nearly as bright as the LED bulbs in the OEM housing, and my big pet peeve is that I could not turn the lights off at all. When wired correctly, the fancy DRLs come on as soon as the ignition is on. That’s annoying if I want to park with the engine running but not be illuminated.
Thoughts on upgrades? New Morimotos are an option, but I would like confirmation that they can be turned off completely when the engine is on.

I am flirting with the idea of moving to SL, buying a house & settling down there. I am of Indian origin with European nationality. Hi everyone, new to personalfinance as well as FIRE. Been looking into my financials more recently, by no means a pro. Besides that, here is the scenario that has been brought up by my parents to myself(32yrs) and my wife(32yrs).
My parents reside on a 3.5 acre plot with a 2800sqft home near our current house. As they near retirement they are thinking about how they will continue to afford to live there and have made a proposal to us.
Here are the financials on my parents, regarding fixed expenses.
Expenses/debt

• House: $180,000 @ 2.9% + $8200 taxes + Home insurance = $2160/mo
• dHELOC: $50,000 @ Variable rate, unsure current rate
• Solar Panels: $10,000 @ 3.9% = $190/mo
• Water bill is minimal, and electric bills averages from $0-100/ month becuase of solar offsetting usage however $190/month payment on panels still exists.

Parents Retirement

• Mom(58yrs) 401k - $150k. Still working 80k/yr salary
• Dad(62yrs) 401k -$50k. Still working, 50k-80k/yr salary

Now on to their proposal. As they get closer to retirement they are seeing that their retirement income + SS isn't going to make things easy for them to retire by 65 given their expenses. They love their house and don't want to sell as they have a great plot of land and the house is nice(needs some renovations but is not a necessity). They threw the idea out to my wife and I about assuming their mortgage(not HELOC) and they want to build in-law quarters on the current house to live long term while we would live in main portion of house.
Now on to our financials: Myself, Wife, + 4 kids under 6, with 1 on the way in November.
Expenses/debt:

• House: $113,000 remaining @ 3.9%
• HELOC: $39,000 variable rate, paying $240 in interest/mo and contributing $300 towards it every month. No other debts

Income:

• Me: Full time nurse @ $40/hr = roughly $3400/mo take home
• Wife: Part time nurse @ $44/hr = roughly $800/mo take home

Expenses:

• Average about $3500/month(mortgage, insurance, utilities, food, misc expenses). Generally we are good about living within our means.
• $700/mo private school for 2 older kids starting in August

Retirement:

• Me 401k with 4% emp match and 12% contributions @ $20,000 balance at the moment + Roth @ balance $20,000 balance(not actively contributing).
  
• Wife 401k no emp match, 10% contribution @ $85,000 balance
  

Now on to the scenario. Let me preface by saying that we have a VERY good relationship with my parents. They would never try to pull one over on us or take advantage, they also understand that their home would eventually be ours anyway when they die.
I think we could pull about $315k for our house in the current market, would likely try to do for sale by owner to avoid realtor fees which would give us a big chunk of cash going into my parents house. The house addition would be my parents financial burden so I don't see their endgame from a financal perspective, but I guess it allows them to stay on the property, we would likely help them with payments as the house would be entirely ours once they pass(hopefully many years from now), and they have built in care when they get older as we are both nurses and would be living right next to them.
The home as whole would be a great place to raise our growing family given the acreage and pool on site. The question utimately is it a viable financial decision for my wife and I? I'm having a tough time seeing where this works out, but it seems like a good plan. I can't quite put my finger on it. I can always work more, but my wife and I are rather comfortable in our current working situation and we have already worked out that I will need to pick up some overtime to cover private school costs. Another thing I didn't mention is that our current neighbors are less than desireable and that has motivated us to move away on multiple occasions despite having a home that we have put a ton of sweat equity into and enjoy. If you call something far from our perception "God", then you don't actually believe in a god, you just call everything you don't understand god.

If he/she gonna punish me, then punish me already. If divine punishments are real, then god don't need you to tell me, it would already happened, duh. If you REALLY need to say this, then is a sign that you don't actually believe in what you are telling me yourself.

For me, that's one of the only good things that religion brings: confort. There is nothing wrong with it for me, really. The problem is that the same confort God sends to that mother, is the same confort that will be sent to a murder(if he apologizes). After all, god is everyone and everything creator, right?

Religion didn't create any life standard. If someone is good, it's good because it's good. If someone is bad, it's bad because it's bad. It's not like if wars didn't happened thousand of times after the so called birth of Jesus.

I don't think we really need to do this. But some non-christian nations are also well developed, like Japan and South Korea. Also some christian based nations are considered "poor", like Haiti and Nicaragua.
