Before I went to boot camp, a friend taught me how to make my rack properly, including perfect 45-degree angled hospital corners. I practiced and practiced until I could fix my rack perfectly with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back. While in boot camp, our company had our first squad bay inspection right around week 03. My rack was perfectly squared away, it was perhaps the best rack in Cape May that morning. Our company commander walked by with a coin in his hand and bounced it on my blanket, it was perfect. He had me come to the center of the squad bay and berated me about SR Neil’s rack (my rackmate). Niel was a wreck, his uniform was a wreck, his screaming “aye aye” was a wreck, his swimming was a wreck. I was ordered to show up to the company commander's office every hour on the hour for additional rounds of PT, something he called HUTA [hoot-ah], which stands for “hooking up that ass,” it was pain town for the rest of my holiday routine. I couldn’t understand why, I had done what I was instructed to do. On our next inspection, Niel’s rack and mine were again near perfection, you best believe those two racks were the best racks in the entire Coast Guard that morning. And this time, Niel and I were made to come to the front of the squad bay, and were berated about our port and starboard neighbor’s rack. We were HUTA'd in front of the company, Niel’s shrieking would have undoubtedly gotten a visit from the police in different circumstances. I still could not understand why. I felt cheated since I had followed my instructions perfectly. At the next inspection there was six of us in front of the squad bay screaming out “1-2-3-01-1-2-3-02…” with our rifles hanging above our heads. I was incredulous. “Why is he making me do this if my rack is BETTER than all of my company?” After the entire company had paid for one of our shipmate’s disorganized rack, I got the point.
About four years after I had graduated boot camp, I was stationed on the newest Coast Guard ship as an EM2, I had gotten there as a plankowner and sailed her around from Pascagoula, Mississippi to SF. We were on our first patrol ever, sailing off the coast of Mexico. Quiet night nothing major happening on the ship, just standing watch looking for drugs/migrants. At around 1900hrs., we got word of 2 possible panga contacts making their way north, the boarding teams were deployed, and we started to chase. By 2100 we were in full pursuit after the pangas, multiple CG assets now on scene and our brand spanking new ship was on battle override maxing out her MTU engines trying to catch up to the action. I was an engineer watch stander assigned to ECRT (engineer casualty response team), which mostly required for me to have a radio and hang out close to main control –– for the most part we hung out on the fantail looking out at the panga chase. About 30 minutes into the chase I heard over the radio the machinery watchstander report a fuel-oil smell in the main engine room, and the EWO asking him to investigate. A few minutes later the watchstander was now screaming over the radio that there was a massive fuel-oil spray from the #1 onto the #2 (the starboard engine spraying diesel onto the port engine, for you non-engineer types), and was asking the EWO permission to emergency stop both engines –– but remember we are under different WQSB conditions and under battle override, Captain has to make these sort of decision. No e-stop for the watchstander, which is debatable, I would have pulled the e-stops so hard! (enter the silence of lambs dude).
I started to run back to main control: “EOW-Machinery, there is approximately 50 gallons of fuel in the bilge below the #2 shaft and still spraying, request permission to e-stop both engines!” the watchstander was now shrieking over the radio. I could sense his voice shaky as he tripped over his words, MK2 was (and still is) a good friend of mine. I pictured him standing a few feet away from what could have been a fuel-oil bomb about to detonate. As I entered main control, the EOW ordered the watchstander out of the engine room and the Con pipped general emergency throughout the ship, we were now in full fledged mission failure. I immediately knew what to do. I grabbed my red “ECRT” labeled flashgear and my boots, I pulled my ODU sleeves down and placed the canvas flash gloves over them. I secured my boots and my pants. I grabbed the roster and started screaming out names until my relief showed up. The EOW was relieved by our MPA and ordered the fire party to assemble and get ready to enter the main engine room. I vividly remember thinking: “Fuck, I’m the fire party.”
I looked over at the rest of the fire party and there was MKC coming from the Chief’s mess, a middle-aged overweight divorcee with a gut who often stuck you with the bill at a bar on grounds of having to pay child support and “that bitch that took my kids” that week. His uniform looked like he’d just ran a triathlon in it, he was shaking so much that he started to have trouble pulling his ODU sleeves down, not to mention that his blouse was drenched in sweat. We had differences in the past, mainly he’d behaved poorly and made us do extra work. My first reaction was to think “look at this piece of shit, he thinks he’s gonna fight the biggest fire our ship has ever seen.” I glanced at our WQSB board, I could see my reflection on it. There I was, in my early 20s with a perfect uniform and flash gear. I was so pale that I could only see my bug-eyes on the white board. I began to walk away to start the AFFF machine that was just outside main control when MKC dropped his flash gear and bumped into the sound-powered phones, knocking them onto the deck. He was a complete mess. Without much thinking I walked over and helped him with his sleeves, then I placed his red shirt and flash hood over his head and handed him his gloves. While he put on his gloves I bent down and fixed his shoelaces and blousing straps. We both walked over the AFFF machine and assembled a fire party of 5 people, I was to be the nozzleman and he was one of the hosemen right behind me.
As we opened the main engine room door and made our way on top of the scuttle, MKC reached around me and turned the handle on the XRAY scuttle and lifted as I covered him with an AFFF extinguisher. We made our way inside, me first. I expected to feel like walking into an oven, but surprisingly it felt cold. MKC handed me down the AFFF nozzle and hose, which I placed over my left shoulder. The smell of fuel-oil hit us like a wall as we made our way deeper into the ladder well. I was so terrified that my knees buckled with every step I took down the ladder well. I started to increasingly feel the weight of the AFFF nozzle but MKC kept picking up the slack right behind me; “place the hose over your right shoulder,” he almost whispered in my ear, “bring it underneath your arm and hold the nozzle straight out.”
We made our way around the gangway behind the engines. We took a squat aiming at the base of the engines. The ship was dead in the water, the waves rocked her back and forth in this sort of unnatural way, it made it really difficult to squat there and point. Against good firefighting practice, MKC placed his knee on the floor behind me and grabbed my back allowing me to rest up against his right arm and shoulder. In what seemed like a blink of an eye the fuel-oil was drowning in AFFF, the foam was falling with even strokes; side-to-side, up-and-down, side-to-side, and up-and-down, it covered both engines and the bilge evenly with such grace that you’d think you’re seeing snow fall. I remember thinking: “How cool is that.” It was me holding the nozzle and MKC moving the hose behind me. He was so close to me that I could smell his breath, he smelled just like an ashtray with some coffee spilled in it. Just like that, no flash from the fuel-oil. There was so much of it in the bilge that I just don’t think we would have survived if it had flashed over. But at that moment I felt sure that we could do it, I was confident in MKC and glad that he was behind me.
As it worked out, it was the first time our ship participated in a drug interdiction mission, a small 110’-WPB caught the pangas with some assistance from a C-130. The next morning, we were back underway and recovered some of the bales the pangas had tossed overboard, it was a mix of pot and cocaine. In the couple years I spent on the ship, we saw a lot of casualties, none as scary as a massive fuel-oil spray. On that deployment we made it to Puerto Vallarta, and MKC offered to pay for my drinks, I drank about 1,000 pesos worth of beer, he paid for it all, HUTA!
TL;DR: Learn a hard lesson on team work in basic, lesson applied in real life. CG doesn't like pussies.

Alright, I understand that for a lot of you, you'd like some advice beyond what is in the side panel of the Subreddit. I see a lot of the same questions on this subreddit and wanted to see if I could just offer a large amount of info at once. I actually went to MTU for my bachelors, and am now here getting my PhD in Computer Science, so I've been here a while. I see a lot of similar posts on this subreddit with some really good questions, so I thought I'd offer some advice to help out a bit, seeing as I've been here for a while.
I've always been rather active on campus, and I've been in a lot of your shoes. I was once a prospective student, I was on academic probation one semester that I was here, I've lived both on and off campus, I was a member of IRHC for a year, and I've had experience as a student, an instructor, and as a grader. My insight isn't the end-all be-all, and I'm sure some people will add their own advice, but I think I have had some perspectives that might help you make the most of your time here and also added a couple small tips at the end of the post to get you a few extra points on your assignments.

General Information and Campus Life

Why should I go to MTU?
I'll be honest, Tech isn't for everyone. It's hard relative to how easy it is to get admitted. You're going to find classes that will put you through the ringer in any major, and professors won't hesitate to throw you into the deep end to put you out of your comfort zone at times. It's not that they don't care, but they're busy and they know you'll need to know how to solve these problems by the time you graduate. If you are able to be disciplined to get your studying done, however, you're going to find yourself surrounded by some really fun, nerdy people. Tech always has something going on, whether it's clubs, some special event, a visiting comedian, or some event within the Residential Halls. Either way, you'll always find yourself occupied, either with studying or, once you're done, having a ball with some really cool people at some event, whether it's tech sponsored or not.
What is the surrounding area like?
It's certainly no big city, but you'll often find something to do if you just look around, and the town is one of the safest in the country. Coupled with the beautiful scenery and the near limitless places to explore, and you'll never really be bored unless you actively lock yourself away. There's a lot of cool ruins if you ask around. Places like Freda, the Dredge, and Copper Harbor are really entertaining to visit either early in the year, or, if you get the chance, Summer. The town's affordable, the people are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet. If you're a city person, and you feel uncomfortable leaving it, I'll warn you that Houghton is a lot more quiet than larger cities like Ann Arbor, but the area and town do resonate with a lot of students, and some decide to return time and again for good reason.
I'm LGBTQ+. Where can I find others to relate to? Who can I talk to if I need help?
First, the school is big on trying to be as inclusive as possible. Sometimes, an individual makes mistakes, but the vast majority of the staff and student population are really accepting, even if you aren't in the majority. The school definitely has more Males, and more Asian/White representation due to it's disproportionate representation in countries like China and India. Still, there are some resources you can use to find others to relate to here. The first place I would visit is the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI). They're in the really out-of-place house in the parking lot between Fisher and Walker. Their whole thing is to try to help students feel welcomed, and they are there to help. There are also members of the Safe Space Allies program, that are there to help make sure you feel okay. If you have an instructor you want to talk to about this stuff, realize that they are offten not trained, and have legal responsibilities if they feel they have to disclose something for your safety or mental well being. It can put them in a tough position sometimes. Often, trained staff, such as those in Counseling Services can offer better advice and many are able to keep what you tell them confidential.
I heard there was a Discord channel somewhere?
There is at least one unofficial one I know of, located here. This is not sanctioned, so I can't guarantee anything with it. I am not very active on it myself. I just patrol the homework channel once in a while to see if someone needs help.

Living Arrangements

Should I live in the dorms or off campus?
Short version, if it's your first year at tech, I really suggest the dorms. Living there gives you a good chance to meet a lot of people, attend a lot of events, and learn a lot about Tech. You don't have to worry about food as much, you're close to all of your classes, and it's the best place to be if you don't have a car, as you can either hitch a ride with someone else or use the Mub shuttle to get around to most places. After you've met some people you find would be good roommates (This isn't the same as a friend! If they're a slob or won't do chores, they're probably not going to be good roommates!), then you can move into an off-campus option. This opens up a lot more freedom, but it's also more work. You'll have to take care of food, and in some more pricey places you may find yourself spending just as much as you would have in the dorms. I personally do live off campus, however. It allows you get get more isolated, and has an added level of freedom. Do be aware that this doesn't mean total freedom, though. In apartments you'll still have upstairs/downstairs/next-door neighbors, and you'll have to be aware of what your landlord and roommates want. In places a bit further away, you'll find rent to be rather affordable. This is especially true in Hancock.
Do I need a car here?
In the dorms, no. Usually there are others around with them. If you live off campus, you may need one depending on where you are living. Tech has a shuttle that orbits town during business hours, and there are taxi services up here as well.
So I'm worried about rooming blind. What can I do to do it?
Things to note: Draw lines and expectations clearly. Be nice, obviously, but make sure they know what you expect. Don't be in a rush to rearrange your dorm from the original split setup until you're sure you're going to want to, and, if you're in the dorms, remember that your RA is there to help too. Be clear when something annoys you and stand your ground if they're mean. In exchange, behave in the same ways and respect the apartment mate's you have as well. Divvy up chores and make sure it's clear when you expect things to get done, and be understanding once in a while.

Preparation and Classwork

How do I figure out if Professor X is any good?
My suggestion is to ask classmates. It's more useful than using sites like Rate My Professor, as often the people responding to those are the extreme cases, especially with intro courses, as a lot of students give bad feedback if they are failed. Asking fellow students will be more practical and useful, and people tend to be more level headed than when they write a RMP post.
I'm torn between a Laptop, a Desktop, or some combination. What should I pick?
There are pros and cons to both. Laptops are nice in their portability, ability to take notes, and their compact nature. Desktops are typically more powerful and are much cheaper. A lot of students use the Desktop with a less powerful laptop as another possible solution. No matter what you choose, there is always the alternative of using a computer on campus. Linux Redhat machines are available in Rekhi and Fisher 3rd floor. Walker has Mac computers. Nearly every other instructional building has at least one lab with Windows computer. If you need a computer, they are provided. This changes the usefulness to a few things. If you like games, I personally think that the Desktop is the way to go. If you want a single portable solution, a powerful laptop is still fine, and if you really insist on note-taking in class, a small portable laptop is very useful as well.
Personally, I use a Desktop. I do this for two reasons. First, the price of one is comparably better than that of an equivalently powerful Laptop. Second, notebooks or pre-printed slides are typically much more dynamic and better for memory retention and note taking than laptops. This, coupled with the fact that notebooks are markedly less distracting in lecture, means you will tend to pay better attention in class to the material. Drawing diagrams and the ability to swap pages and return to previous material is significantly improved with a simple notebook, and the ability to take quick notes will help you significantly academically. I used to have a powerful laptop, but it was too much work and the temptation to do other things in class was too tempting. Once in a while, a small cheap laptop has been helpful, but most times I leave it behind for a trusty pencil and paper, because they’re just that much more robust. This should hold true for essentially any major. I’m a CS major after all.
I'm [insert major], should I get a Mac or PC? Will it hose me?
No. Get what you prefer. Any OS specific software will be available on the Windows machines. If you’re concerned, Most Mechanical Engineering students will spend more time with Windows. Most software engineering and computer science students will spend time in Linux, though Mac/Windows have ways of easily remotely accessing a machine on campus.
Where should I get textbooks?
The bookstore is often the easiest solution, but they are never the cheapest. Amazon and publishers websites are often much more affordable. I personally wait a week in a class before I decide to purchase most textbooks, however, as many classes don’t make heavy use of them, and that could save you an upwards of 500 dollars a semester. Be careful when purchasing them to make sure the edition is consistent with the one the prof uses, as problem numbers can change. Second, if purchasing online, be careful of Unbound or loose-leaf textbooks. They are usually much cheaper, but you’re literally just buying a stack of papers instead of something that is bound together like a book. Finally, don’t be afraid to buy used. Used textbooks only cost an arm, instead of the full arm + leg + little brother being turned into a possessed suit of armor. Renting is also fine, depending on if you ever think you’ll have to refer to the book after the semester is over.
I have a quick question about Canvas…
Canvas pages are published whenever the professor publishes them. A lot of classes have feedback hidden in the project submissions comments, or the “view feedback” button if you see one. When submitting, my suggestion is to re-submit everything when you submit stuff again. The profs can see old submissions, but may not look at them (or get annoyed when it’s submitted in small bits).
I need help with X on my homework assignment.
First thing is to use office hours. Bad lecturers often make really good teachers 1 on 1. Second, getting on a prof’s good side, or the Graduate TA’s good side, makes it easier to argue for better grades later on, asking for references for scholarships/internships, and actually helps in general with the final grade. If you don’t want to do that, the learning centers are often incredibly helpful as well. These can be packed, especially near deadlines, though, so if you want to use them, make sure you start your assignments early. This is easier said than done. Asking classmates can be risky depending. When asking, make sure you’re empty handed and not looking at each others’ work in particular. Sharing your work, even if it is meant to be a guide, is a liability. If a student is caught cheating off of your work, the teacher has to assume both of you cheated, since there isn’t any way to tell who had the answer first. DON’T USE CHEGG, STACKOVERFLOW, COURSE HERO, ETC. I can’t emphasize this enough, for two reasons. First, this is blatant cheating more than it is actually solving the problem. And if you found it, your grader can as well. Second, these responses aren’t always correct and aren’t in the control of the lecturer. It might be correct for a similar case or for the specific problem, but you aren’t learning from it, and you risk serious trouble if you’re caught doing it.
An emergency came up! What should I do.
There are a couple things you need to do. First, email Student Services immediately with your situation and, if applicable, any evidence you have. Scans of paperwork should be good enough, though you can also go directly into the offices located Admin building. Second, email your profs and CC your TAs (if you know who they are). Explain that you’ve requested it from the Student Services office. Otherwise, your profs may not know which student is requesting it or will not be able to make accommodations for you as easily. Ask what you can do while you are gone and what material you can go over as well. Showing initiative will often times make the instructor more willing to work with your absence.
I see Public Safety's a thing. What should I contact them for?
These guys are champs. They have a hotline at (906)-487-2216. They're amazingly useful and can help with anything from jumping a dead battery if the car is on campus, to letting you into a building if you're locked out, to escorting you to your car if you're worried about something. They can help with a surprising amount.

Internships and Career Fair

What should I wear to Career Fair!?
Your goal is to look nice, not gaudy. Most people tell you to dress up, but I think it's more important to also make sure you dress professional. This means that your prom outfit isn't what you want to show up in. For guys, a nice pair of slacks, a collared long-sleeve dress shirt, and a tie is the go-to outfit. No need for a vest. For women, a modest dress or the slacks/collared shirt is a good way to go. A sports jacket or suit is fine, but isn't necessary since, in that room, it's probably going to be too hot to wear anyways. Your goal is to have the outfit say "I am a capable worker." Not, "I'm a party animal" or "I just came from Cinderella's Ball". You can show them you're likable through words and actions. That's what the talking and interview is for.
Sure, the recruiters are in polo shirts, but that's because they already have the job. You need to impress upon them that you're going to be a good worker, and their first impression will be that outfit.
In the interview, try to wear a similarly professional outfit, but one that isn't the same. For guys, it can be as simple as changing the tie (in a pinch), though swapping the shirt is also recommended. For girls, a second dress may be helpful. This isn't as required as you'd think though, so don't stress if you don't have the funds for a second outfit.
Okay, in general, how do I land a job at Career Fair?
Even before Career Fair, I suggest you do extracurricular stuff. Be well rounded. Most companies will hire a 2.5-3.0 GPA student with a lot of extracurricular activities under their belt over a 4.0 that does nothing but classwork.
First, do some research on some of the companies you are interested in. What do they do? What are they looking for? Check to see if they are looking for your major.
In your first year, I suggest going around to companies you find interesting and offering resumes anyways. Your chances of an internship may be low, but a lot of recruiters may recognize you the next year and be more interested in talking with you.
Make a good first impression, give a firm handshake, and hand them the resume in a way that they don’t have to turn it over. The small details count. Act confident, even if you’re not, and be friendly. Practice a few interviews and understand not everyone will call back.
Where can I polish my resume, and when do I start?
First thing is start now. Make a resume and work from there. Your first version will suck. Second, take it in to a meeting at the Multiliteracies Learning Center in Walker. Schedule a meeting and go in there to work. It’ll help. Next, take it into a few workshops. Most departments will offer resume building workshops that can really help as well.
Finally, sometimes you’ll get conflicting advice for resumes. This is because everyone has their own preferences, and it’s hard to sell yourself when you have 1 page that needs to convey your entire qualifications in under 30 seconds. Make sure it is clear, well kept, and understandable. It doesn’t need to be flashy, colorful, or have any pictures on there. That usually ends up detracting from what you have to say anyways.
Are classes cancelled during career fair?
There’s been discussion about this, but no. If a prof doesn’t cancel class, it’s still on. This includes things like Labs. It’s okay to skip class, since you’re adults, but be aware that’ll be an absence on your record. Most of the time, though, professors do anticipate this.

Tips from a grader

What is the easiest way to get extra points on my assignments?
First thing's first, don't gloss over questions. I deduct more points for students answering a question we didn't ask that I do nearly anything else. Don't look at the question and gloss over it for key words. Read it twice to make sure you understand what it says. It takes, like, 30 extra seconds, and you'll get back more points doing this than anything else. Second, if you have anything less than fairly decent handwriting, don't submit handwritten material as much as possible. Typing it out or making a digital chart allows your information to be clearer and will help you out. You guys do the assignment once, but a TA has to re-do the assignment for each student in your class. Making their job harder can be a great way to make them more attentive to your answers and more merciless with point deductions. Second, if a canvas assignment lets you, submit as a PDF instead of a .doc/.txt/etc. PDF does a much better job of preserving formatting, which can ruin an otherwise good flow chart, grid, graph, or essay. For most TA's, if they can't understand an answer, it's wrong.
Haha! I got away with cheating on this assignment!
So first off, there are definitely TA's that don't notice this stuff. They are busy people, working on their own, much harder classes, while trying to juggle grading on top of it. Sometimes they don't care as much as they should, but there are just as many that do, and often you can't tell when they've noticed you cheating. TA's notice patterns and strange mistakes. They're looking at hundreds of assignments, and often it stands out when a student does something strange and will look into it. Professors and Teaching Assistants are not required to inform a student when they are reported to Academic Integrity, and often Academic Integrity does not inform students when they are until it feels ready to act upon it. While you may think you've gotten away with it, the office of Academic Integrity may just as easily have compiled information on it and are looking for a pattern.
Do I have any rights I should know about as a student?
Yes. FERPA is basically your right to privacy in a class. It is a federal law that information of a student's performance in a class be kept private to all but individuals that are working directly with the class. This means that if you were my student, I must make an effort to not release any information about your performance to anyone not involved in administering the class without your permission. We can share this information with things such as other TAs, the instructor, and the director, but not to your family, for example. The notable exception is in the case you are a minor, in which case your parents and legal guardians do have a right to know about your performance.
What does Tech even consider plagiarism?
Tech has two criteria for plagiarism. If the material fits the definition of either of these, it is considered plagiarism.
This means that if you retrieve information from outside of provided course materials, you must source it, even if you did not use the work directly in your submission. Secondly, even if you do source it, if your submission portrays their work as your own at any point, it is still plagiarism. Using the same wording, sentence structure etc, is still not allowed at tech. Furthermore, there is another major thing you need to keep in mind. You can plagiarize yourself. Any past work, or using the same work to submit for multiple assignments can be considered cheating. If you plan to do this, make it clear that you would like to and obtain permission from your instructor first, and cite your previous work. This is an easy trap to fall into as a student.

Instead, SolariumVR gives you access to a rendering API that is much similar to that of a high level game engine such as Unity or UE4.
SolariumVR is a multi process application, just as most browsers are today. There is a main rendering process in which all rendering to the headset is done. Each website is run on a separate process and just sends commands to the main rendering process. This means that if a website locks up the user will not experience any frame rate loss. This also allows for multiple websites to be running and rendering at the same time, which is not possible with WebGL/VR.
This API guarantees that all VR websites will work through a consistent API. You could think of the rendering API as the DOM for VR. But don’t worry, there’s still going to be plenty of room for customization and flexibility.
What headsets are supported?
Currently only the Oculus Rift is supported. There is a chance that SteamVR may work through Revive. I have yet to try it out. In the future, I’d love to support as many headsets as possible including AR headsets.

The examples may seem a bit complicated. But the APIs that SolariumVR provides are supposed to be fairly low level. Either SolariumVR or the community will build a higher level frameworks. I foresee there being frameworks like React style, Angular style and maybe a framework that feels very similiar to Unity's Component architecture.
What about 2D content?
2D UI elements still exist in VR. To solve this problem the underlying Flutter Engine (see flutter.io) aka dart:ui is embedded into Solarium VR, with some slight changes. I am behind on some updates to Flutter, so don’t expect to find the exact same code.
Is it open sourced?
Not yet. It definitely is a long term goal. But as of right now SolariumVR is a one man company. I believe putting time and effort to manage an open source project would hinder rather than help development at this moment. But it is built upon many open source projects like Chromium, Dart, and Flutter, so it would be in spirit to eventually have it open sourced also.

What about 2D content?
2D UI elements still exist in VR. To solve this problem the underlying Flutter Engine aka dart:ui is embedded into Solarium VR, with some slight changes. I am behind on some updates to Flutter, so don’t expect to find the exact same code.
Is it open sourced?
Not yet. It definitely is a long term goal. But as of right now SolariumVR is a one man company. I believe putting time and effort to manage an open source project would hinder rather than help development at this moment. But it is built upon many open source projects like Chromium, Dart, and Flutter, so it would be in spirit to eventually have it open sourced also.

Is it stable?
No. The APIs are subject to change, and most likely will. Currently I am calling the project a technical preview.
